Setup and Assembly
Carefully unpack all components and ensure all parts are present before beginning assembly. Refer to the included parts list for verification.
- Mounting the Base: Secure the drill press base to a sturdy workbench using appropriate bolts and washers (not included). Ensure the base is stable and level.
- Attaching the Column: Insert the column into the base and tighten the securing bolts.
- Installing the Head Assembly: Carefully slide the head assembly onto the top of the column. Align the keyway and secure it with the provided set screws.
- Mounting the Work Table: Slide the work table assembly onto the column below the head assembly. Adjust its height and position as needed, then lock it in place with the table locking handle.
- Installing the Chuck: Clean the tapered spindle and the inside of the chuck. Place the chuck onto the spindle and firmly tap it into place with a rubber mallet.
- Power Connection: Connect the drill press to a grounded 220V AC power outlet.
Operating Instructions
1. Preparing for Operation
- Select Drill Bit: Choose the correct drill bit for your material and desired hole size. Insert the drill bit into the chuck and tighten it securely using the chuck key.
- Adjust Table Height: Loosen the table locking handle and adjust the work table to the desired height. Ensure there is sufficient clearance for the workpiece and drill bit. Tighten the locking handle.
- Secure Workpiece: Place the workpiece on the work table. Use clamps or a drill press vise to firmly secure the workpiece to prevent it from rotating or shifting during drilling.
- Set Depth Stop: Adjust the depth stop to control the drilling depth. This prevents drilling deeper than intended.
- Adjust Speed: The DWT TBM05-16 features variable speed. Adjust the speed according to the material being drilled and the drill bit size. Generally, harder materials and larger bits require slower speeds.
2. Drilling Procedure
- Ensure all safety precautions are observed.
- Turn on the drill press using the power switch.
- Slowly lower the drill bit into the workpiece using the feed handle. Apply steady, even pressure.
- Allow the drill bit to cut through the material. Do not force the drill.
- Once the desired depth is reached (or the hole is complete), retract the drill bit from the workpiece.
- Turn off the drill press and wait for the drill bit to come to a complete stop before removing the workpiece or making any adjustments.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your DWT Bench Drill TBM05-16. Always disconnect the power supply before performing any maintenance.
- Cleaning: After each use, clean the drill press to remove dust, chips, and debris. Use a brush or vacuum cleaner. Do not use solvents that may damage plastic parts.
- Lubrication: Periodically apply a light coat of machine oil to moving parts such as the column, quill, and table adjustment mechanisms to ensure smooth operation and prevent rust.
- Chuck Maintenance: Keep the chuck jaws clean and free of debris. If the chuck becomes stiff, clean it thoroughly and apply a small amount of lubricant.
- Belt Tension: Check the drive belt tension periodically. Adjust if necessary according to the instructions in the full service manual (if applicable).
- Power Cord Inspection: Regularly inspect the power cord for any signs of damage, cuts, or fraying. Replace immediately if damaged.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Drill does not start | No power supply; Faulty power switch; Motor overload. | Check power connection and circuit breaker; Test power switch; Allow motor to cool down. |
| Excessive vibration | Loose drill bit; Unsecured workpiece; Loose mounting bolts; Worn bearings. | Tighten drill bit in chuck; Secure workpiece firmly; Check and tighten all mounting bolts; Contact service for bearing replacement. |
| Drill bit binds or stalls | Incorrect feed pressure; Dull drill bit; Incorrect speed setting; Workpiece not secured. | Reduce feed pressure; Sharpen or replace drill bit; Adjust speed for material; Secure workpiece. |
| Inaccurate drilling | Loose chuck; Loose column or head assembly; Worn drill bit. | Ensure chuck is tight; Check and tighten column/head assembly bolts; Replace worn drill bit. |
