3. Setup

3.1 Initial Inspection

Upon unboxing, carefully inspect the guitar for any signs of damage. Ensure all strings are properly seated and the tuning pegs are functional. The guitar comes with a protective gig bag for transport and storage.

3.2 Tuning the Guitar

The Deviser L-12X features an integrated KLT-17A preamp with a built-in tuner. To tune your guitar:

  1. Press the 'TUNER' button on the preamp to activate the tuner. The display will illuminate.
  2. Pluck each string individually. The display will show the note being played and indicate if it is sharp or flat.
  3. Adjust the corresponding tuning peg until the display indicates the correct pitch.
  4. Repeat for all 12 strings. For a 12-string guitar, strings are typically tuned in pairs, with one string in each pair tuned to the standard pitch and the other an octave higher (for the lower strings) or in unison (for the higher strings).
  5. Press the 'TUNER' button again to deactivate the tuner.

3.3 Connecting to an Amplifier

To utilize the electro-acoustic capabilities of your guitar:

  1. Ensure your amplifier is turned off and its volume is set to minimum.
  2. Connect a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable from the guitar's output jack (located at the bottom of the guitar) to the input of your amplifier.
  3. Turn on your amplifier and slowly increase its volume to a desired level.
  4. Adjust the guitar's onboard preamp controls as needed.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Using the Onboard Preamp (KLT-17A)

The KLT-17A preamp allows you to shape your guitar's amplified tone. It includes the following controls:

  • VOLUME: Controls the overall output level of the amplified signal.
  • BASS: Adjusts the low-frequency response for warmth and depth.
  • MIDDLE: Adjusts the mid-frequency response for presence and clarity.
  • TREBLE: Adjusts the high-frequency response for brightness and sparkle.
  • TUNER: Activates the built-in chromatic tuner.
  • PHASE: A phase switch can help reduce feedback in amplified settings, especially at high volumes. Experiment with this switch to find the optimal setting for your environment.
  • BATT. (Battery Indicator): Illuminates when the battery level is low, indicating it's time for replacement.

4.2 Battery Replacement

The preamp is powered by a 9V alkaline battery. When the BATT. indicator lights up, replace the battery:

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the side of the guitar, near the preamp controls.
  2. Open the compartment and remove the old battery.
  3. Insert a new 9V alkaline battery, ensuring correct polarity.
  4. Close the battery compartment securely.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

Regular cleaning helps preserve the finish and playability of your guitar:

  • Wipe down the body, neck, and strings with a soft, lint-free cloth after each use to remove sweat and oils.
  • For a deeper clean, use guitar-specific cleaning and polishing products. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
  • Clean the fretboard periodically with a suitable fretboard conditioner to prevent drying and cracking.

5.2 String Replacement

Strings should be replaced regularly, as old strings can lose their tone and intonation. For a 12-string guitar, it is often recommended to replace all strings at once to maintain balanced tension and tone. Refer to a guitar technician or online resources for detailed 12-string restringing instructions.

5.3 Storage

Proper storage is crucial for the longevity of your instrument:

  • Store the guitar in its included gig bag when not in use to protect it from dust, scratches, and minor impacts.
  • Avoid exposing the guitar to extreme temperatures or humidity fluctuations, which can cause wood warping or cracking.
  • Do not store the guitar near heat sources or in direct sunlight.

6. Troubleshooting

6.1 No Sound When Amplified

  • Check if the instrument cable is securely connected to both the guitar and the amplifier.
  • Ensure the amplifier is turned on and its volume is not at zero.
  • Verify that the guitar's VOLUME knob on the preamp is turned up.
  • Check the battery in the preamp. If the BATT. indicator is lit, replace the battery.
  • Test with a different instrument cable or amplifier to rule out faulty equipment.

6.2 Poor Sound Quality / Feedback

  • Adjust the BASS, MIDDLE, and TREBLE controls on the preamp to find a balanced tone.
  • Try engaging or disengaging the PHASE switch on the preamp to reduce feedback, especially in loud environments.
  • Ensure the strings are clean and not worn out. Old strings can produce dull or muddy tones.
  • If feedback persists, try moving further away from the amplifier or reducing the volume.

6.3 Tuning Instability

  • Ensure strings are properly stretched after replacement.
  • Check that the tuning pegs are tight and not slipping.
  • Extreme temperature changes can affect tuning stability. Allow the guitar to acclimate to its environment.
