Setup and Adjustment
Proper adjustment of your Talon 18 pack is crucial for comfort and stability during your activities.
1. Initial Fit and Torso Length Adjustment
The Talon 18 features an adjustable torso length to ensure a precise fit. Locate the hook-and-loop panel behind the shoulder harness. Adjust the harness up or down until the top of the shoulder straps are approximately 1-2 inches below the top of your shoulders, allowing the hipbelt to sit comfortably over your iliac crest (hip bones).

2. Hipbelt Adjustment
Once the torso length is set, fasten the hipbelt buckle. Pull the hipbelt straps forward to tighten until the hipbelt is snug and supportive, transferring the pack's weight to your hips.
3. Shoulder Strap Adjustment
Tighten the shoulder straps until the pack feels secure against your back. Avoid overtightening, as the primary weight should be on your hips.
4. Sternum Strap Adjustment
Fasten the sternum strap across your chest and adjust its height and tension for comfort. This strap helps stabilize the pack and keeps the shoulder straps from slipping.
5. Load Lifter Straps
Located above the shoulder straps, these straps pull the pack closer to your body, improving stability and comfort. Adjust them to a 45-degree angle for optimal effect.

Operating Your Pack
The Talon 18 is designed for efficient organization and access to your gear.
Main Compartment
Access the main 18-liter compartment via the large zippered opening. This is ideal for larger items like extra layers, food, and first-aid kits.
External Pockets
- Front Stretch Mesh Pocket: Perfect for stashing a jacket or other items you need quick access to.
- Side Stretch Mesh Pockets: Designed to hold water bottles securely.
- Zippered Hipbelt Pockets: Convenient for small essentials like snacks, phone, or GPS.
Hydration Sleeve
The external hydration sleeve (located behind the back panel) accommodates a hydration reservoir (not included) for easy refills without opening the main compartment.
Stow-on-the-Go Trekking Pole Attachment
This unique system allows you to quickly attach and detach trekking poles without removing your pack. Locate the elastic loop on the shoulder strap and the bungee cord on the lower side of the pack.
Maintenance and Care
Proper care will extend the life of your Osprey Talon 18 pack.
- Cleaning: Hand wash with mild soap and cold water. Do not use bleach or harsh detergents. Air dry thoroughly in a shaded area. Do not machine wash or tumble dry.
- Storage: Store your pack in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight when not in use. Ensure it is completely dry before storing to prevent mildew.
- Zippers: Keep zippers clean and free of debris. Lubricate occasionally with a silicone-based zipper lubricant if they become stiff.
- Repairs: For significant damage, contact Osprey customer service or a professional repair service.
Troubleshooting
Here are solutions to common issues you might encounter:
- Pack feels uncomfortable or heavy:
- Ensure the torso length is correctly adjusted. Verify that the hipbelt is snug and carrying most of the weight. Adjust load lifter straps and sternum strap for optimal balance. Redistribute contents inside the pack, placing heavier items closer to your back.
- Shoulder straps slip:
- Tighten the sternum strap and ensure it is at an appropriate height. Check that the shoulder straps are not too loose and that the torso length is correct.
- Zippers are stiff or stuck:
- Clean any dirt or debris from the zipper teeth. Apply a small amount of zipper lubricant or a graphite pencil to the teeth and work the zipper back and forth.
- Water bottle falls out of side pocket:
- Ensure the bottle is fully seated in the pocket. Some bottles may fit more securely than others. Consider using a carabiner to clip the bottle to a compression strap if available.
