Instruction Manual
Product Overview
The Discovery Spark 707 AZ Telescope is an achromatic refractor designed for beginners, offering clear views of celestial and terrestrial objects. Its easy-to-use alt-azimuth mount and sturdy tripod make it an ideal choice for initial explorations of the night sky, including lunar landscapes, planets, and brighter deep-sky objects. It can also function as a spotting scope for daytime observations.
The optical system features glass lenses with an anti-reflective coating to enhance light gathering and image quality.

Setup and Assembly
Follow these steps to assemble your Discovery Spark 707 AZ Telescope:
- Set up the Tripod:
Unfold the aluminum tripod legs and extend them to a suitable height. Secure the legs using the locking clamps. Ensure the tripod is stable on a flat surface. Attach the accessory tray to the tripod's spreader bars for convenient storage of eyepieces and other small items.

- Attach the Alt-azimuth Mount:
Secure the alt-azimuth mount to the top of the tripod. Ensure it is firmly tightened to prevent any wobbling during observation.
- Mount the Optical Tube:
Carefully place the telescope optical tube onto the alt-azimuth mount. Use the provided screws or clamps to secure the tube to the mount. Ensure the tube is balanced and stable.
- Install the Finderscope:
Attach the 5x24 optical finderscope to its designated bracket on the main telescope tube. Tighten the screws to hold it in place. The finderscope is crucial for locating objects in the sky.

- Insert the Diagonal Mirror and Eyepiece:
Insert the 90° diagonal mirror into the focuser of the telescope. This mirror provides a more comfortable viewing angle. Then, insert your chosen eyepiece (e.g., H 20mm for lower magnification and wider field of view) into the diagonal mirror. Secure it with the thumbscrew.

Operating the Telescope
Aligning the Finderscope:
Before observing, the finderscope must be aligned with the main telescope. Point the main telescope at a distant, stationary object (e.g., a tree or building) during the day. Look through the main telescope's eyepiece and center the object. Then, look through the finderscope and adjust its alignment screws until the same object is centered in the finderscope's crosshairs. This alignment ensures that whatever you see in the finderscope is also in the field of view of your main telescope.
Focusing:
Once an object is centered, use the focuser knob on the main telescope to bring the image into sharp focus. Turn the knob slowly until the image is clear and crisp.

Changing Magnification:
The telescope comes with multiple eyepieces (SR 4mm, H 12.5mm, H 20mm) and a 3x Barlow lens to vary magnification. A lower millimeter (mm) value eyepiece provides higher magnification. The Barlow lens triples the magnification of any eyepiece it is used with. Always start with the lowest magnification eyepiece (H 20mm) to locate and center objects, then switch to higher magnifications as needed.
The 1.5x erect image eyepiece is useful for terrestrial observations, as it corrects the inverted image typically seen through astronomical telescopes.
Observation Tips:
- For astronomical observations, choose a dark location away from city lights.
- Allow your eyes to adapt to the darkness for at least 20 minutes before observing.
- Use the alt-azimuth mount to move the telescope horizontally (azimuth) and vertically (altitude) to track objects.
- The included "Space. Non-Empty Emptiness" knowledge book provides valuable information and guidance for observing various celestial bodies.
Maintenance and Care
- Cleaning Optics: Use a soft, lint-free cloth specifically designed for optical lenses. Gently wipe away dust. For smudges, use a specialized optical cleaning solution and a clean cloth. Avoid touching the lens surfaces with your fingers.
- Storage: When not in use, store the telescope in a dry, dust-free environment. Keep all caps on the optical tube and eyepieces to prevent dust accumulation.
- Handling: Always handle the telescope and its components with care. Avoid sudden impacts or dropping the equipment.
- Environmental Protection: Do not expose the telescope to extreme temperatures or humidity. Avoid direct sunlight exposure for prolonged periods, especially the objective lens, as it can focus sunlight and cause damage.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Image is blurry or out of focus. | Incorrect focus setting. | Adjust the focuser knob slowly until the image is sharp. |
| Cannot find objects easily. | Finderscope is not aligned with the main telescope. | Align the finderscope during daylight hours using a distant, stationary object. |
| Image is dim or unclear. | Light pollution; dirty optics; incorrect eyepiece for conditions. | Move to a darker location. Clean lenses carefully. Use a lower magnification eyepiece for brighter views. |
| Image is inverted or reversed. | Normal for astronomical telescopes; diagonal mirror may be oriented differently. | This is normal for astronomical viewing. For terrestrial viewing, use the 1.5x erect image eyepiece. |
