2. Safety Information

WARNING: Diving with compressed air is inherently dangerous and requires proper training and certification. This equipment should only be used by certified divers who have received appropriate instruction on its use and maintenance.

  • Always perform a thorough pre-dive safety check on all your equipment, including the R105 Octopus, before every dive.
  • Ensure all connections are secure and free from leaks.
  • Never attempt to service or repair the regulator yourself beyond the scope described in this manual. Refer to an authorized SCUBAPRO technician for all repairs and annual servicing.
  • Familiarize yourself with the operation of the dive/pre-dive switch before entering the water.
  • The R105 Octopus is intended as a secondary air source. Always have a primary regulator and an alternative air source readily available.
  • Rinse the regulator thoroughly with fresh water after each use.

Failure to follow these safety guidelines can result in serious injury or death.

4. Setup

Proper setup of your R105 Octopus is crucial for safe diving. Follow these steps:

  1. Attach to First Stage: Connect the yellow super-flow hose of the R105 Octopus to an available low-pressure port on your first stage regulator. Ensure the connection is finger-tight and secure. Do not overtighten.
  2. Route the Hose: Route the hose in a manner that allows for easy deployment and access by you or a buddy in an emergency. The long, yellow hose is designed for this purpose.
  3. Secure the Octopus: Use the provided clip or a suitable alternative to secure the R105 Octopus to your BCD (Buoyancy Control Device) in a highly visible and easily accessible location, typically on the chest area.
  4. Pre-Dive Check: Before each dive, pressurize your system and test the R105 Octopus. Breathe from it to ensure it delivers air smoothly. Check for any leaks around the hose connections or the regulator body.

5. Operation

The R105 Octopus is designed for straightforward operation as an alternate air source.

  • Pre-Dive/Surface Use (Pre-Dive Position): When the regulator is not in use or you are on the surface, set the VIVA switch to the "Pre-Dive" position. This minimizes the chance of free-flow, especially when entering the water or if the regulator is dropped.
  • Underwater Use (Dive Position): Before descending or if you need to use the octopus underwater, rotate the VIVA switch to the "Dive" position. This optimizes airflow and breathing performance.
  • Breathing: When needed, place the mouthpiece in your mouth and breathe normally. The classic downstream valve design ensures smooth and consistent air delivery.
  • Clearing: To clear water from the regulator, press the purge button located on the front cover, or exhale sharply into the mouthpiece.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance extends the life of your R105 Octopus and ensures its reliable performance.

  • Rinsing: After every dive, thoroughly rinse the entire regulator in fresh, clean water. Ensure the dust cap is securely in place on the first stage (if still attached) to prevent water from entering the first stage. Depress the purge button several times while rinsing to flush out any salt or debris from inside the second stage.
  • Drying: Allow the regulator to air dry completely in a shaded, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. Do not use heat to dry.
  • Storage: Store the R105 Octopus in a cool, dry place, away from chemicals, solvents, and extreme temperatures. Avoid kinking the hose during storage.
  • Periodic Servicing: Your SCUBAPRO R105 Octopus requires periodic professional servicing by an authorized SCUBAPRO technician. Refer to your SCUBAPRO dealer for recommended service intervals, typically annually or every 100 dives, whichever comes first.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the hose for cracks, cuts, or bulges. Check the mouthpiece for tears or damage. Replace any damaged components immediately.
