3. Product Overview
3.1 Front Panel
The front panel of the N480D-RP features a dual LED display for process value (PV) and set point (SV), along with control buttons for configuration and operation.
- PV Display (Red): Shows the current process value (e.g., temperature).
- SV Display (Green): Shows the set point or other parameter values during configuration.
- 'P' Button: Accesses parameter menus.
- Up/Down Arrows: Adjust values or navigate menus.
- Right Arrow: Confirms selections or shifts digits during value entry.
- Status Indicators: LEDs for RUN, OUT, A1, A2 (Alarm/Auxiliary outputs).
3.2 Rear Panel and Wiring Terminals
The rear panel contains the electrical connection terminals and the USB port. Refer to the wiring diagram for correct connections.

Figure 1: NOVUS N480D-RP Temperature Controller. The image displays the front panel with red and green LED readouts (480.0), control buttons (P, Up, Down, Right), and status indicators (RUN, OUT, A1, A2). The side label shows the wiring diagram for power (100-240V AC), outputs (OUTA, AUX), and input terminals.
4. Setup
4.1 Mounting
The N480D-RP is designed for panel mounting in a 1/16 DIN (48x48mm) cutout.
- Cut a 45x45mm (1.77x1.77 inch) opening in the panel.
- Insert the controller into the cutout from the front.
- Secure the controller using the provided mounting clamps from the rear of the panel. Tighten screws evenly to ensure a snug fit without over-tightening.
4.2 Wiring
Refer to the wiring diagram on the device label (Figure 1) and the following instructions for electrical connections. Ensure all power is disconnected before wiring.
- Power Supply (Terminals 1 & 2): Connect 100-240V AC, 50/60Hz power to these terminals. Observe correct polarity if applicable for your region.
- Output A (OUTA - Terminals 6 & 7): This is the primary control output, configurable as a relay or pulse output. Connect your heating/cooling element or solid-state relay (SSR) input here.
- Auxiliary Outputs (AUX - Terminals 8 & 9): These terminals correspond to auxiliary outputs A1 and A2, typically used for alarms or secondary control functions. Consult the full product manual for specific configuration options.
- Input (Terminals 10, 11 & 12): Connect your temperature sensor (e.g., thermocouple, RTD) to these terminals. Ensure correct sensor type and wiring configuration (e.g., 2-wire, 3-wire RTD, thermocouple polarity).
4.3 USB Connection
The N480D-RP features a USB port for connection to a computer. This allows for configuration, monitoring, and data logging using compatible NOVUS software (e.g., NConfig). Connect a standard USB cable from the controller's USB port to your computer.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Power On and Initial Display
Upon applying power, the controller will perform a self-test, and then the PV display will show the current temperature, while the SV display will show the set point.
5.2 Set Point Adjustment
To change the set point:
- Press the 'P' button briefly. The SV display will flash, indicating it's ready for adjustment.
- Use the Up and Down arrow buttons to change the value.
- Use the Right arrow button to shift the cursor for digit-by-digit adjustment.
- Press 'P' again to confirm the new set point and exit the adjustment mode.
5.3 Parameter Configuration
The controller has various parameters for input type, control mode (PID, On/Off), alarm settings, and output configurations. Access these parameters by pressing and holding the 'P' button for a few seconds to enter the parameter menu. Navigate using the Up/Down arrows and select/confirm with the Right arrow or 'P' button. Refer to the detailed programming guide (usually available from NOVUS) for a complete list and explanation of all parameters.
5.4 Output Control
The N480D-RP controls temperature by activating its outputs based on the configured control mode and set point.
- Relay Output: For direct switching of loads within its contact rating.
- Pulse Output: Provides a pulsed signal suitable for driving Solid State Relays (SSRs) for precise control.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning
Clean the front panel with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as they may damage the display or casing.
6.2 Calibration
Periodic calibration may be required to maintain accuracy, especially in critical applications. Refer to the advanced programming manual or contact NOVUS technical support for calibration procedures.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your N480D-RP controller, consider the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No power/Display off | Incorrect wiring; No power supply; Blown fuse | Check power connections (Terminals 1 & 2); Verify power source; Inspect internal fuse (if accessible, by qualified personnel only). |
| Incorrect temperature reading | Sensor wiring error; Wrong sensor type configured; Damaged sensor | Verify sensor wiring (Terminals 10, 11, 12); Check sensor type setting in parameters; Replace sensor if damaged. |
| Output not activating | Incorrect set point; Control mode issue; Output wiring error; Load malfunction | Adjust set point; Check control mode (e.g., PID, On/Off) and parameters; Verify output wiring (Terminals 6, 7, 8, 9); Test the connected load independently. |
| Controller unresponsive | Software glitch; Power instability | Cycle power (turn off and on); If problem persists, contact technical support. |
