4. Installation Guide
The RetraxPRO XR is designed for straightforward installation. Basic tools are required, and assistance from another person is recommended for lifting and positioning the cover.
4.1 Pre-Installation Steps
- Unpack all components and verify against the package contents list.
- Remove all shipping materials, including screws, shipping brackets, and white shipping tubes from both sides of the canister. Retain one shipping bracket for later use as a shim.
- Clean the truck bed rails thoroughly to ensure proper adhesion of seals.

4.2 Step-by-Step Installation
- Install Side Rails to Canister: Pull 6-8 inches of the rolling cover out of the canister. While holding the cover to prevent it from rolling back up, guide the cover into the rail channel. Position the rails into the canister spirals. Align the front and rear rail attachment tabs and holes to the inside of the corresponding canister holes. Attach the rails using the provided mounting screws. Repeat for the other side.
- Attach Front Cover: The front cover attaches through the top of the rail. Secure it with the provided screws.
- Position Cover on Truck Bed: With the help of another person, lift the cover assembly and place the front seal on the bulkhead. Ensure the rubber gasket lays forward and flat, not extending past the bed rail cap.
- Adjust Rail Alignment: Use the saved shipping bracket as a spacer to adjust the distance between the rails and the tailgate. The bottom of the shipping bracket is exactly 1/8 inch thick. Place this bracket between the tailgate and the rail, then pull the rail to the bracket to use it as a spacer. This ensures a 1/8 inch gap.
- Install Bed Rail Clamps: Position the clamps between the leveling screws, both front and back. Use a 9/16 inch or 1/2 inch wrench (depending on your truck application) or sockets to tighten the clamps. It is important to push down and tilt the rail up approximately 2 degrees while simultaneously tightening the clamps to minimize water intrusion.
- Install Drain Tubes: Remove all protective films. Start with the passenger side. Insert the drain tube into the bottom of the canister and rotate clockwise to secure. Do the same for the driver side. Route the opposite ends of the drain tubes to an existing drain hole in the truck bed. If no drain hole exists, you may need to create one.

5.1 Opening the Cover
- Unlock the cover using the provided key.
- Press the button at the center of the latch to pop open the handle.
- Gently pull the handle towards the tailgate to retract the cover into the canister. The cover will glide smoothly along the rails.
5.2 Closing and Locking the Cover
- Pull the cover from the canister towards the tailgate until it fully extends.
- Push firmly down on the end of the lock handle to engage the latch.
- Insert the key and turn until it is locked to secure the cover in place. The cover can be locked in any position along the rails.
6. Care and Maintenance
The RetraxPRO XR is designed for minimal maintenance due to its sealed, maintenance-free ball bearings. Avoid using any lubricants in the rails, as this can interfere with the ball bearings' seals and may void your warranty.
- Regularly clean the cover with mild soap and water to remove dirt and debris.
- Inspect the seals periodically for any signs of wear or damage.
- Ensure drain tubes are clear of obstructions to allow proper water drainage.
7. Troubleshooting
- Cover not sliding smoothly: Check the rail alignment and ensure no debris is obstructing the tracks. Avoid using lubricants.
- Water leakage: Verify all seals are properly seated and the drain tubes are clear. Re-check rail alignment and clamp tightness.
- Tailgate not closing properly: Ensure the cover is fully retracted or extended and not interfering with the tailgate mechanism. Adjust rail alignment if necessary.
