Setup Guide

1. Download the TP-Link Deco App

The TP-Link Deco app is essential for setting up and managing your Deco mesh system. Search for "TP-Link Deco" on the Apple App Store (for iOS devices) or Google Play Store (for Android devices) and download the application.

2. Prepare Your Network

  • Unplug your existing modem and any current router you may be using.
  • Connect one of the Deco units to your modem's Ethernet port using the provided Ethernet cable. This unit will serve as your main Deco.
  • Power on your modem first, then connect the power adapter to the main Deco unit and plug it into an electrical outlet. Wait for the Deco unit's LED indicator to pulse blue, indicating it is ready for setup.

Understanding LED Status Indicators

The LED on your Deco unit provides important information about its current status:

LED StatusIndication
Solid GreenDeco is working normally and connected to the internet.
Pulsing BlueDeco is ready for setup or pairing.
Solid RedDeco has an issue, such as no internet connection.
Pulsing RedDeco is disconnected from the main unit or experiencing a network error.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Deco system:

  • Firmware Updates: Regularly check for and install firmware updates through the Deco app. Updates often include performance improvements, new features, and critical security patches.
  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to gently clean the exterior surfaces of your Deco units. Avoid using liquid cleaners, aerosols, or abrasive chemicals, as these can damage the device.
  • Optimal Placement: Ensure all Deco units are placed in open areas, away from large metal objects, thick walls, and sources of electromagnetic interference (e.g., microwaves, cordless phones, Bluetooth devices). This helps maintain strong wireless signals.
  • Regular Restarting: If you experience intermittent network issues or slower performance, a simple restart of your modem and all Deco units can often resolve the problem.

Troubleshooting

No Internet Connection

  • Check the LED status of your main Deco unit. If it is solid red, there may be an issue with your modem or your internet service provider (ISP).
  • Ensure the Ethernet cable connecting the main Deco unit to your modem is securely plugged into both devices.
  • Restart your modem, wait for it to fully boot up, and then restart your main Deco unit.

Poor Wi-Fi Signal or Slow Speeds

  • Relocate Deco units closer to each other or to the areas in your home experiencing poor coverage.
  • Ensure there are no major physical obstructions (e.g., thick concrete walls, large metal appliances) directly between Deco units.
  • Check for potential interference from other electronic devices operating on similar frequencies.
  • Use the Deco app to verify that your devices are connecting to the optimal Deco unit and to analyze network performance.

Deco Unit Not Connecting

  • If an add-on Deco unit's LED is pulsing red, it indicates it is too far from another Deco unit. Try moving it closer to an existing Deco unit.
  • Ensure the unit is powered on and its LED is pulsing blue before attempting to add it via the app.
  • If issues persist, try resetting the problematic Deco unit by pressing the reset button (typically a small pinhole on the bottom) for a few seconds until the LED flashes. Then attempt to add it again through the app.
