  • Do not overreach: Maintain proper footing and balance at all times.
  • Disconnect power: Always unplug the tool before making adjustments, changing accessories, or performing maintenance.
  • Use the right tool for the job: Do not force a small tool or attachment to do the job of a heavy-duty tool.
  • Maintain tools with care: Keep cutting tools sharp and clean for better and safer performance.
  • Check for damaged parts: Before use, check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect the tool's operation.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 WEN 6534 Electric Hand Planer Operation

  1. Power On: To start the planer, press the safety button and then squeeze the power trigger. The planer will not activate if only the trigger is pressed.

Video 1: Demonstration of the WEN Hand Planer's safety button and power trigger, blade operation, and dust port adjustment.

  2. Planing Technique:
    • Place the front shoe of the planer flat on the workpiece.
    • Start the motor, then slowly push the planer forward, maintaining even pressure.
    • For consistent results, make several shallow passes rather than one deep cut.
    • Utilize the V-shaped chamfer grooves on the base plate for easily flattening sharp post corners.
    • The onboard kickstand will protect the blade and workpiece when the planer is set down between cuts.
  3. Stopping the Planer: Release the power trigger to stop the motor.

5.2 WEN JN8504 Plate Joiner Operation

  1. Marking Workpiece: Accurately mark the locations for biscuit slots on both pieces of wood to be joined.
  2. Positioning the Joiner:

Figure 6: Angled view of the WEN JN8504 Plate Joiner, demonstrating its compact design for various joint applications.

Align the joiner's fence with your marks and ensure it is stable against the workpiece. The adjustable fence allows for precise alignment for various joint types, including edge miter, corner, T, offset, frame, and edge-to-edge joints.

  3. Making the Cut: Turn on the joiner and firmly push the tool into the workpiece until the blade reaches the set depth. Allow the blade to stop completely before withdrawing the tool.
  4. Inserting Biscuits: Apply wood glue to the slots and biscuits, then insert the biscuits into the slots. Join the two pieces of wood together and clamp until the glue dries.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your WEN tools. Always disconnect the power cord before performing any maintenance.

  • Cleaning: After each use, clean both tools to remove sawdust and debris. Use a soft brush or compressed air. Do not use solvents that may damage plastic parts.
  • Blade Inspection (Hand Planer): Regularly check the planer blades for sharpness and damage. Dull or chipped blades should be replaced promptly to ensure clean cuts and prevent motor strain.
  • Blade Inspection (Plate Joiner): Inspect the carbide-tipped blade for wear or damage. A dull blade can lead to poor cut quality and increased effort. Replace as necessary.
  • Cord Inspection: Periodically check the power cords for cuts, fraying, or other damage. Replace damaged cords immediately.
  • Storage: Store tools in their original carrying case (for the joiner) or a clean, dry place, out of reach of children.
