5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Inserting Batteries
The UC-4200 features four independent slots for cylindrical batteries and two dedicated slots for 9V batteries. Ensure correct polarity when inserting batteries.

Figure 5.1: Inserting Different Battery Types.
5.2 Understanding the Display
The LCD display provides comprehensive information for each battery slot:
- Voltage (V): Current voltage of the battery.
- Current (mA): Charging or discharging current.
- Capacity (mAh/Wh): Accumulated charged or discharged capacity.
- Internal Resistance (mΩ): Indication of battery health (available in Test mode for slot 4).
- Time (h:mm): Elapsed time for the current operation.
- Battery Type: Automatically detected (Li-ion, Ni-MH, etc.).
- Mode: Current operating mode (Charge, Discharge, Refresh, Test).
5.3 Operating Modes
Use the MODE button to cycle through the available modes. Use the SLOT button to select a specific slot to configure.
- Charge Mode: Standard charging mode. The charger automatically detects battery type and sets a recommended charging current. You can manually adjust the current using the CURRENT button.
- Discharge Mode: Discharges the battery to a set voltage before recharging. Useful for Ni-MH/Ni-Cd batteries to reduce memory effect.
- Refresh Mode: Cycles the battery through discharge and charge cycles multiple times to restore capacity, especially for older Ni-MH/Ni-Cd batteries.
- Test Mode: Measures the actual capacity of the battery by fully discharging and then fully recharging it. This mode is typically available only for slot 4 for advanced testing, including internal resistance measurement.
5.4 Adjusting Charging Current
After inserting a battery and selecting a mode, press the CURRENT button to cycle through available charging current options (e.g., 500mA, 1000mA, 2000mA). Choose a current appropriate for your battery's capacity. Higher currents charge faster but may generate more heat.
5.5 Removing Batteries
Once the charging or testing process is complete (indicated on the display), carefully remove the batteries from the slots. The charger will return to standby mode.
6. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Disconnect the charger from power before cleaning. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the exterior. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Keep the battery contacts clean.
- Storage: Store the charger in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Inspection: Periodically inspect the power cord and charger for any signs of damage. If damaged, discontinue use and contact support.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Charger display is off. | No power connection; power outlet issue. | Ensure power adapter is securely connected to charger and wall outlet. Test outlet with another device. |
| Battery not charging. | Incorrect battery insertion; battery is non-rechargeable or severely damaged; poor contact. | Re-insert battery ensuring correct polarity. Verify battery type is rechargeable. Clean battery contacts and charger contacts. |
| "Error" message on display. | Battery short circuit; reverse polarity; incompatible battery. | Remove battery immediately. Check polarity. Ensure battery is compatible and not damaged. |
| Charger or batteries become hot. | High charging current; poor ventilation; damaged battery. | Reduce charging current. Ensure adequate ventilation around the charger. Discontinue use of any excessively hot battery. |
