2. Safety Instructions

Always observe general power tool safety warnings and specific safety instructions for random orbital sanders. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, and/or serious injury.

  • Work Area Safety: Keep your work area clean and well-lit. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust.
  • Electrical Safety: Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions.
  • Personal Safety: Always wear eye protection (safety glasses or goggles), hearing protection, and a dust mask when operating the sander. Secure loose clothing and long hair.
  • Tool Use and Care: Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. Disconnect the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools.
  • Dust Management: Sanding operations produce dust. Ensure proper dust extraction is used, either with the included dust bag or an external dust extraction system, to minimize airborne particles.
  • Vibration: While this tool is designed for low vibration, prolonged use can still cause vibration-related injuries. Take regular breaks and use anti-vibration gloves if necessary.

Insert a charged Metabo 18V battery pack into the battery receptacle on the rear of the sander until it clicks securely into place. To remove, press the release button on the battery pack and slide it out.

4.2. Attaching the Sanding Pad

4.3. Attaching the Dust Bag

Slide the compact textile dust bag onto the dust extraction port located at the rear of the sander until it is firmly seated. For larger projects or finer dust, an external dust extraction system can be connected to this port (adapter may be required, sold separately).

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Powering On/Off

To turn the sander ON, slide the power switch to the "I" position. To turn OFF, slide the switch to the "O" position. The electronic soft start feature will ensure a smooth start-up, minimizing surface damage.

5.2. Variable Speed Adjustment

The sander features a variable speed control dial, allowing you to adjust the oscillation speed from 4,000 to 10,000 RPM. Select a lower speed for fine finishing and delicate materials, and a higher speed for aggressive material removal.

5.3. Sanding Techniques

  • Apply light, even pressure across the sanding surface. Excessive pressure will not speed up material removal and can damage the tool or the workpiece.
  • Move the sander in overlapping circular or elliptical patterns to ensure even sanding and prevent swirl marks.
  • For best results, sand with the grain of the wood when possible.
  • Regularly check the sanding sheet for wear and replace it when dull to maintain efficiency and prevent damage to the workpiece.

6. Maintenance

6.1. Cleaning the Tool

After each use, disconnect the battery pack and use a soft brush or compressed air to clean dust and debris from the ventilation openings and around the backing pad. Do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners.

6.2. Emptying and Cleaning the Dust Bag

Regularly empty the compact textile dust bag to maintain optimal dust collection efficiency. Detach the bag from the sander and shake out the accumulated dust. The bag can be cleaned with a soft brush or by rinsing with water and allowing it to dry completely before reattaching.

6.3. Inspecting the Backing Pad

Periodically inspect the hook-and-loop surface of the backing pad for wear or damage. A worn pad will not hold sanding sheets securely, leading to poor sanding results. Replace the backing pad if necessary.
