1. Introduction
The Fujikura FSM-88S+ is an advanced core alignment fusion splicer designed for single-mode optical fiber splicing. This model shares the same technology, accessories, and appearance as the FSM-90S+, differing only in model number. It features faster automation to reduce installation times, allowing operators to complete the splicing and heating process with minimal direct interaction.
Key features include fiber retention clamps that gently hold the spliced fiber, preventing accidental displacement, and a user-friendly design optimized for efficiency and convenience in various work environments.

3. Setup
3.1 Preparing the Splicer
The FSM-88S+ is designed for immediate use upon opening its carrying case. The carrying case (CC-39) offers multiple configurations:
- Direct Use: Open the case, and the splicer is ready.
- On Top of Case: The splicer can be placed on top of the closed carrying case for elevated work.
- With Work Tray: Utilize the work tray (WT-09L, WT-09R) independently or attached to the case. The work tray features two drawers for tool and battery storage and can be divided to fit your workspace.

3.2 Powering the Device
Connect the AC Adapter (ADC-20) and AC Power Cord (ACC-14) to an appropriate power source and the splicer. Alternatively, ensure the Battery Pack (BTR-15) is fully charged and correctly installed for portable operation.
4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Core Alignment Technology
The FSM-88S+ utilizes high-precision lenses for accurate core-to-core alignment, effectively compensating for core-cladding concentricity errors. This technology also enables the splicer to differentiate between various fiber types.
4.2 Advanced Image Processing
Equipped with advanced image processing, the splicer analyzes fiber profiles as brightness patterns. This allows the FSM-88S+ to identify the true core position, resulting in consistently low splice loss.
4.3 Fiber Discrimination Function
The FSM-88S+ automatically detects the fiber type and adjusts the optimal arc discharge parameters accordingly, ensuring precise splicing for different fiber specifications.
4.4 Splicing Process
- Fiber Preparation: Strip the fiber coating, clean the fiber with alcohol (using AP-02), and cleave it precisely using the CT50 Fiber Cleaver.
- Fiber Placement: Place the prepared fibers into the splicer's V-grooves. The sheath clamp is compatible with loose tube fiber; adjust the protrusion part by changing the switch position if needed.
- Automated Splicing: The splicer will automatically align the fiber cores and perform the fusion splice. The fiber retention clamps will gently hold the spliced fiber once the sheath clamps open, preventing it from moving until lifted by the operator.
- Protection Sleeve Positioning: Position a 60mm protection sleeve over the splice point. The sheath clamp's shape is optimized for this, with a 30mm length from the splice point to the edge of the clamp, allowing easy centering using your finger as a reference.
- Heating: The splicer will automatically heat the protection sleeve to secure the splice.

5. Maintenance
5.1 Cleaning
Regularly clean the V-grooves and other fiber contact areas using the V-groove Cleaning Brush (VCB-01) and alcohol to ensure optimal splicing performance and prevent contamination.
5.2 Electrode Replacement
Electrodes have a limited lifespan. Replace them with the Spare Electrode (ELCT2-16B) when prompted by the splicer or if splice quality degrades. Refer to the Quick Reference Guide for detailed replacement instructions.
5.3 Battery Care
To prolong the life of the Battery Pack (BTR-15), avoid complete discharge and store it in a cool, dry place when not in use. Charge the battery using the provided AC Adapter (ADC-20).
6. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your FSM-88S+ Fusion Splicer, consider the following general troubleshooting steps:
- Poor Splice Loss: Ensure fibers are clean, properly cleaved, and correctly placed in the V-grooves. Check electrode condition and replace if necessary.
- Power Issues: Verify that the AC adapter is securely connected or that the battery pack is charged and correctly installed.
- Error Messages: Consult the Quick Reference Guide or the full user manual for specific error code interpretations and solutions.
- Fiber Retention Clamp Malfunction: Check for any obstructions or debris around the clamps.
