4. Operating Instructions

Follow these steps to brew coffee with your BUNN VP17-3 coffee maker:

  1. Prepare the Brew Funnel: Place a filter in the brew funnel. Add the desired amount of ground coffee into the filter.
  2. Position Decanters: Place empty coffee decanters on the warming plates beneath the brew funnel. Ensure they are correctly positioned to catch the brewed coffee.
  3. Add Water: Open the lid of the water reservoir and pour cold, fresh water into the reservoir. The amount of water added will correspond to the amount of coffee brewed.
  4. Brewing Cycle: The brewing cycle will begin automatically once water is added to the reservoir. Hot water will flow over the coffee grounds and into the decanters.
  5. Warming: The lower warmers will keep the brewed coffee hot. Ensure the warmer switches are in the 'ON' position if you wish to use them.
  6. Serving: Once brewing is complete, carefully remove the decanters. The SplashGard funnel helps prevent hot liquid from splashing.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your coffee maker.

  • Cleaning: Clean the exterior with a damp cloth. Do not immerse the unit in water. The unit is not dishwasher safe.
  • Brew Funnel and Decanters: Wash the brew funnel and decanters after each use with mild soap and water.
  • Descaling: Over time, mineral deposits (calcification) can build up, especially if the machine is not used daily or water is not drained thoroughly. Regular descaling is recommended to prevent blockages and maintain brewing efficiency. Consult the full product manual for detailed descaling instructions.
  • Filter Replacement: Use appropriate coffee filters for optimal brewing.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your BUNN VP17-3, refer to the following common solutions:

  • Weak or Insufficient Brew: This can be caused by too coarse a grind, too little coffee, or insufficiently tamping the grounds before brewing. Adjust grind size and coffee quantity as needed.
  • No Water Flow: Ensure the unit is plugged in and powered on. Check if the water reservoir has been filled. If the unit has been unused for an extended period, calcification might be blocking water paths; refer to descaling instructions.
  • Overheating or Smoking: If the unit overheats or produces smoke, immediately unplug it from the power source. This indicates a serious malfunction. Do not attempt to repair it yourself. Contact qualified service personnel.
  • Coffee Not Hot Enough: Verify that the warming plate switches are in the 'ON' position. Ensure the unit has had sufficient time to pre-heat before brewing.
