HJC RPHA 31 Motorcycle Helmet User Manual

Model: RPHA 31

1. Introduction

Thank you for choosing the HJC RPHA 31 Motorcycle Helmet. This manual provides essential information for the proper use, maintenance, and care of your helmet. Please read it thoroughly before using your helmet to ensure maximum safety and performance. The HJC RPHA 31 is designed to meet or exceed U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) FMVSS No. 218 standards.

2. Safety Information

Your HJC RPHA 31 helmet is DOT-approved, signifying it has undergone rigorous testing for energy absorption, penetration resistance, and chin strap retention. Always wear your helmet correctly fastened. A helmet can only provide protection if it fits properly and is securely worn. Never modify your helmet, as this can compromise its protective capabilities.

Important: A helmet involved in an impact should be replaced immediately, even if visible damage is not apparent. The structural integrity may be compromised.

3. Setup

3.1. HJ-39 Pinlock Shield Installation

The helmet comes standard with an HJ-39 Pinlock-prepared shield, offering 99% UV protection and an anti-scratch coating. A Pinlock insert is included. To install the Pinlock insert, gently flex the shield and align the Pinlock pins with the holes on the shield. Press the Pinlock insert firmly onto the pins until it seals against the shield. Ensure a tight seal to prevent fogging.

The shield features a quick, simple, and secure ratchet system for easy removal and installation. Refer to the visual guide below for shield removal and installation.

3.2. Sun Visor Adjustment

The helmet includes a dark smoke sun visor, which is adjustable in 3 steps for optimal positioning. Locate the sun visor control mechanism, typically on the side or bottom edge of the helmet. Slide the control to deploy or retract the sun visor to your desired position.

4. Operating

4.1. Ventilation System

The RPHA 31 features a full front-to-back ventilation system with 2 intakes and 4 exhausts. These vents are designed to effectively expel heat and humidity, ensuring a cooler and more comfortable ride. Locate the intake vents on the front of the helmet and the exhaust vents on the rear. Open or close them as needed to regulate airflow.

4.2. Bluetooth System Readiness

Your HJC RPHA 31 helmet is ready for SMART HJC 21B & 50B Bluetooth communication systems (sold separately). Consult the specific instruction manual for your SMART HJC Bluetooth system for installation and operation details.

5. Maintenance

5.1. Interior Cleaning

The helmet interior features a premium, hygienic fabric designed to wick moisture and dry quickly. The crown and cheek pads are removable and washable. To clean, gently remove the pads and hand wash them with mild soap and water. Allow them to air dry completely before reinstallation. Do not use harsh chemicals or machine wash.

5.2. Shield Care

Clean the HJ-39 shield with a soft cloth and mild soap and water. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the anti-scratch coating and UV protection. For optimal visibility, regularly clean both the exterior and interior of the shield, including the Pinlock insert.

5.3. Exterior Cleaning

Clean the helmet's exterior shell with a soft cloth and mild soap and water. Avoid petroleum-based products or harsh chemicals, which can damage the helmet's finish and materials.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Visor not closing completely: Check for any obstructions in the shield mechanism or if the shield is properly seated in its ratchets. Ensure all components are intact and not damaged. If a component is broken, contact HJC support for replacement parts.
  • Excessive wind noise: Ensure all vents are closed if not needed, and the shield is fully closed and sealed. Check for proper fit of the helmet on your head.
  • Fogging: Ensure the Pinlock insert is correctly installed and sealed against the shield. If fogging persists, check for damage to the Pinlock seal or consider replacing the insert.
