4. Setup and First Use
4.1 Filling the Water Tank
- Ensure the iron is unplugged from the power outlet.
- Open the water filling inlet cover.
- Fill the water tank with tap water up to the 'MAX' indication. Do not overfill.
- Close the water filling inlet cover securely.
Note: For optimal performance and to prolong the life of your iron, it is recommended to use demineralized or distilled water, especially in areas with hard water. Do not use perfumed water, water from tumble dryers, or other additives.
4.2 Initial Heat-Up
- Place the iron on its heel on a stable ironing board.
- Plug the power cord into a grounded wall socket. The OptimalTEMP indicator light will start blinking, indicating the iron is heating up.
- When the indicator light stops blinking and stays on, the iron is ready for use. This typically takes less than 2 minutes.
- During the first use, a slight odor or some small flakes may be emitted. This is normal and will disappear after a short time.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 OptimalTEMP Technology
Your Philips PerfectCare iron features OptimalTEMP technology, which means you do not need to adjust the temperature setting. The iron is safe to use on all ironable fabrics, from delicate silk to tough denim, without the risk of burning or shining. You can iron different fabrics consecutively without pre-sorting or waiting for the iron to heat up or cool down.
5.2 Steam Ironing
- Ensure the water tank is filled and the iron is heated (indicator light solid).
- Hold the iron horizontally. Continuous steam will be emitted automatically as you move the iron.
- For an extra burst of steam, press and hold the steam trigger (refer to Figure 2, item 3). This delivers a powerful 180g steam boost for stubborn creases.

Figure 3: Iron emitting steam. This image shows the soleplate of the iron releasing steam, demonstrating its steam ironing capability.
5.3 Dry Ironing
To iron without steam, simply do not press the steam trigger. The iron will function as a dry iron, suitable for fabrics that require no steam.
5.4 Spray Function
For dampening stubborn creases, press the spray button (refer to Figure 2, item 4). This will release a fine mist of water from the spray nozzle onto the fabric.
5.5 Automatic Shut-Off
For safety and energy saving, the iron is equipped with an automatic shut-off function. If the iron is left unattended on its heel for 8 minutes, or on its soleplate for 30 seconds, it will automatically switch off. The indicator light will blink to signal this. To restart the iron, simply pick it up or move it, and it will quickly reheat.
6. Maintenance and Cleaning
6.1 Cleaning the Soleplate
The SteamGlide Plus soleplate is designed to be non-stick and scratch-resistant. To clean it:
- Ensure the iron is unplugged and completely cool.
- Wipe the soleplate with a damp cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner.
- Do not use scouring pads, vinegar, or harsh chemicals as these can damage the soleplate.

6.2 Descaling (Calc-Clean)
To maintain optimal steam performance and prolong the life of your iron, regular descaling is recommended. This iron features an integrated Calc-Clean function. Follow these general steps for descaling:
- Ensure the iron is unplugged and completely cool.
- Fill the water tank to the MAX indication with tap water.
- Plug in the iron and let it heat up until the indicator light stops blinking.
- Unplug the iron.
- Hold the iron horizontally over a sink.
- Activate the Calc-Clean function. (On many Philips irons, this involves pressing and holding a specific button, or shaking the iron while holding it over a sink. Refer to the full product manual for precise activation steps for your model.)
- Shake the iron gently back and forth over the sink. Steam and boiling water, along with scale particles, will be expelled from the soleplate.
- Continue until the water tank is empty.
- Plug in the iron again and let it heat up to dry the soleplate.
- Unplug and let the iron cool down completely before storing.
Recommendation: Perform the Calc-Clean process every 1-3 months, depending on water hardness and frequency of use.
6.3 Storage
- Unplug the iron and allow it to cool down completely.
- Empty any remaining water from the tank.
- Store the iron on its heel in a dry, safe place.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your iron, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Iron does not heat up. | Not plugged in, power outage, automatic shut-off activated. | Check power connection. Move the iron to reactivate if auto shut-off is active. |
| No steam is coming out. | Water tank is empty, iron not hot enough, Calc-Clean needed. | Fill water tank. Wait for indicator light to be solid. Perform Calc-Clean. |
| Water drips from the soleplate. | Iron not hot enough for steam, overfilled water tank. | Wait for the iron to reach full temperature. Do not overfill the water tank. |
| White flakes come out of the soleplate. | Scale build-up. | Perform the Calc-Clean procedure. Use demineralized water. |
