Johnson Pump SPX FLOW 500 GPH Cartridge Bilge Pump Motor

Model: 34-28552

Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of your Johnson Pump SPX FLOW 500 GPH 12V Cartridge Bilge Pump Motor. This replacement motor is designed for marine applications, offering reliable performance and ease of service.

Safety Information

Always disconnect power before installing or servicing the pump. Ensure all electrical connections are waterproof and meet marine standards. This pump is designed for pumping water with solids up to 1 mm. It is not suitable for pumping water with high concentrations of oil or diesel. For such applications, use nitrile impeller pumps with better resistance.

Setup and Installation

The Johnson Pump SPX FLOW cartridge motor is designed for straightforward installation and replacement. The pump housing can remain attached to the boat and hoses during motor replacement.

  1. Preparation: Ensure the bilge area is clean and free of debris. Disconnect all power to the existing pump.
  2. Removing the Old Cartridge: If replacing an existing cartridge, lift the tab on top of the cartridge, give it a twist, and pull it out. No tools are required for this step.
  3. Installing the New Cartridge: Align the new motor cartridge with the pump housing. Push it down and twist until it locks securely into place. The cartridge contains a complete motor-impeller unit.
  4. Electrical Connection: Connect the pump's 12V DC wiring. The pump requires a 2.5 A current and a 5 A fuse. Ensure connections are secure and properly insulated for marine environments. The pump features Dura Port outlets for easy and secure hose connections, designed to prevent stress cracks from overtightened hose clamps. Straight and 90° Dura Ports, along with a removable check valve, are included.

Operating Instructions

This submersible centrifugal pump operates on 12V DC power. It is designed for use on small boats and is specifically engineered for seawater applications, capable of handling solids up to 1 mm in size.

  • Power On: Once installed and wired correctly, apply 12V DC power to the pump.
  • Flow Rate: The pump provides a flow rate of up to 40 liters per minute (630 GPH) in a straight configuration, and 33 liters per minute (525 GPH) at a 0.9-meter head.
  • Automatic/Manual Operation: This high-performance pump can be optionally equipped with an automatic or manual on/off function (control switches are not included).

Maintenance

The cartridge design significantly simplifies cleaning and maintenance, eliminating the need for complete pump disassembly.

  1. Regular Inspection: Periodically check the bilge area for excessive debris that could clog the pump intake.
  2. Cleaning the Impeller: To clean the impeller, disconnect power, then remove the motor cartridge as described in the 'Setup and Installation' section. Clean any debris from the impeller and the pump housing.
  3. Cartridge Replacement: If the motor cartridge is damaged or worn, it can be easily replaced without tools. Simply remove the old cartridge and install a new one.

Troubleshooting

  • Pump Not Operating:
    • Check all electrical connections for tightness and corrosion.
    • Verify that the 12V DC power supply is active.
    • Inspect the fuse (5 A recommended) and replace if blown.
    • Ensure the motor cartridge is properly seated and locked into the pump housing.
  • Low Flow or No Water Output:
    • Check for blockages in the intake screen or discharge hose.
    • Remove the motor cartridge and inspect the impeller for debris or damage.
    • Ensure the pump is fully submerged in water if it is not self-priming.
  • Unusual Noise:
    • Disconnect power and check for foreign objects lodged in the impeller or housing.
    • Ensure the pump is securely mounted to prevent vibration.
