3. Setup

3.1 Assembly

  1. Unpack Components: Carefully remove all components from the packaging, including the control unit, coil, shafts, and headphones.
  2. Assemble Shafts: Connect the three carbon-fiber shaft sections. Ensure they are securely locked into place.
  3. Attach Coil: Secure the EQX 11" Double-D coil to the lower shaft using the provided hardware. Ensure the coil cable is wrapped snugly around the shaft to prevent tangling and false signals.
  4. Connect Control Unit: Attach the control unit to the upper shaft. Connect the coil cable to the control unit's port, ensuring a tight, waterproof seal.
  5. Adjust Armrest: Position the adjustable armrest for comfortable use.

3.2 Charging the Battery

The Equinox 700 is powered by a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery. Before first use, fully charge the detector.

  • Locate the magnetic USB charging connector on the control unit.
  • Connect the charging cable to the detector and a suitable USB power source (e.g., wall adapter, computer USB port).
  • The battery indicator on the display will show charging progress. A full charge typically takes several hours.

The included wireless headphones also require charging. Refer to their separate instructions for charging procedures.

4. Operating the MINELAB Equinox 700

4.1 Power On/Off

Press and hold the Power button (located on the control pod) for a few seconds to turn the detector on or off. The display will illuminate upon startup.

4.2 Detect Modes

The Equinox 700 features three primary detect modes, each optimized for specific detecting environments:

  • Park Mode: Ideal for high-trash areas like parks and urban environments. This mode is designed to handle iron and other common trash items while still identifying valuable targets.
  • Field Mode: Best suited for open fields, agricultural land, and areas with less metallic interference. It excels at finding fine coins and artifacts.
  • Beach Mode: Specifically engineered for wet sand and saltwater conditions, where mineralization can be challenging for other detectors. This mode effectively filters out saltwater interference.

To switch between modes, press the "Detect Mode" button on the control pod. The selected mode will be indicated on the display.

4.3 Multi-IQ Technology

MINELAB's Multi-IQ technology allows the Equinox 700 to operate on multiple frequencies simultaneously, providing superior depth and sensitivity across a wider range of targets and ground conditions. You can also select specific single frequencies (4 options available) if you have a particular target in mind or prefer a specific frequency for certain conditions.

4.4 Target Identification (ID)

The Equinox 700 provides fast and accurate Target ID numbers on the display, along with superior audio control. These features help you to confidently sort valuable targets from trash and estimate their size and depth before digging.

  • Target ID Numbers: Higher numbers generally indicate larger or more conductive targets.
  • Audio Tones: Different tones correspond to different target types, providing an auditory cue for identification.
  • Pinpoint Mode: Use the Pinpoint button to narrow down the exact location of a detected target for precise recovery.

4.5 Waterproofing

The Equinox 700 is fully waterproof and submersible up to 16 feet (5 meters). This allows for effective metal detecting in shallow water, rivers, and even for light diving applications. Ensure all connections, especially the coil cable and charging port cap, are securely sealed before submerging the detector.

5. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, especially in wet or dirty conditions, wipe down the detector with a damp cloth. For saltwater use, rinse the coil and lower shaft with fresh water. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Coil Care: Inspect the coil and cable for any damage. The EQX 11" Double-D coil comes with a skidplate for protection; ensure it is properly attached.
  • Battery Care: Store the detector with a partially charged battery (around 50%) if not used for extended periods. Avoid fully discharging the battery frequently.
  • Storage: Store the detector in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. The collapsible design allows for compact storage.
