2. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and longevity of your subwoofer. It is recommended that installation be performed by a qualified professional.

2.1 Enclosure Recommendations

The 1100 Series subwoofers are designed to perform well in both sealed and small vented enclosures. Refer to the specifications section for recommended enclosure volumes.

  • Sealed Enclosure Volume: 0.8 - 1.5 cubic feet
  • Ported Enclosure Volume: 0.8 - 1.75 cubic feet

2.2 Mounting

Ensure the mounting surface is rigid and secure. Use appropriate fasteners to secure the subwoofer to the enclosure. The mounting diameter required is 10.937 inches, and the mounting depth is 5.8 inches.

2.3 Wiring (D4 Model)

This subwoofer is a D4 (Dual 4 Ohm) model. This means it has two voice coils, each with a 4 Ohm impedance. Proper wiring is essential to match the impedance requirements of your amplifier.

  • For a 2 Ohm final load: Wire the two 4 Ohm voice coils in parallel. Connect the positive terminal of one coil to the positive terminal of the other, and similarly for the negative terminals. Connect this parallel combination to the amplifier.
  • For an 8 Ohm final load: Wire the two 4 Ohm voice coils in series. Connect the positive terminal of one coil to the negative terminal of the other. The remaining positive and negative terminals will then connect to the amplifier.

Always consult your amplifier's manual for compatible impedance loads. Incorrect wiring can damage both the subwoofer and the amplifier.

3. Operating Instructions

Once installed, proper operation ensures the longevity and performance of your subwoofer.

3.1 Power Handling

The 1100 Series Subwoofer D4 has a recommended RMS power handling of 200-400 Watts and a peak power handling of 800 Watts. Ensure your amplifier's output matches these specifications to prevent damage.

3.2 Break-in Period

Allow a break-in period of approximately 20-30 hours of normal listening before operating the subwoofer at high volumes. This allows the suspension components to loosen and reach their optimal performance characteristics.

3.3 Amplifier Settings

Properly set your amplifier's gain, crossover, and bass boost settings. An improperly set gain can lead to clipping, which can damage the subwoofer even at lower volume levels. Use a low-pass filter to ensure only bass frequencies are sent to the subwoofer.

4. Maintenance

The DD Audio 1100 Series Subwoofer is designed for durability. Minimal maintenance is required to ensure its longevity.

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the cone and surround. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect the subwoofer for any signs of damage to the cone, surround, or dust cap. Check wiring connections for tightness and corrosion.
  • Environment: Ensure the subwoofer is installed in an environment free from excessive moisture, dust, and extreme temperatures.

5. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your subwoofer, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No Sound from Subwoofer
  • Loose or incorrect wiring
  • Amplifier not powered on or in protect mode
  • Head unit settings incorrect
  • Damaged subwoofer or amplifier
  • Check all wiring connections (power, ground, remote, RCA, speaker).
  • Verify amplifier power and check for protection lights.
  • Ensure subwoofer output is enabled and volume is up on head unit.
  • Test components individually if possible.
Distorted Sound
  • Amplifier gain set too high (clipping)
  • Incorrect crossover settings
  • Subwoofer over-powered or under-powered
  • Loose mounting or enclosure issues
  • Reduce amplifier gain until distortion disappears.
  • Adjust low-pass filter to appropriate frequency (e.g., 80-120 Hz).
  • Ensure amplifier power matches subwoofer RMS rating.
  • Check subwoofer mounting and enclosure integrity.
Subwoofer Overheating
  • Improper impedance match
  • Amplifier clipping
  • Inadequate ventilation
  • Verify correct wiring for amplifier impedance.
  • Re-adjust amplifier gain to prevent clipping.
  • Ensure proper airflow around the amplifier and subwoofer.
