RELiON RB200 12.8V 200Ah LiFePO4 Battery User Manual

Model: RB200

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient use of your RELiON RB200 12.8V 200Ah Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) deep cycle battery. The RB200 is designed as a high-performance replacement for traditional lead-acid batteries in various applications, including marine, recreational vehicles (RVs), and solar energy systems.

The RB200 offers significant advantages such as lighter weight, compact size, and extended cycle life compared to lead-acid alternatives. It delivers 100% of its rated 200 Amp Hour capacity and incorporates a built-in Battery Management System (BMS) for enhanced safety and performance.

2. Safety Information

Read all safety instructions before installing or operating the battery. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, or other serious injury.

  • Do not short circuit: Ensure proper polarity when connecting the battery. Accidental short circuits can cause severe damage to the battery and connected equipment, and pose a fire hazard.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures: Do not expose the battery to temperatures outside its specified operating range. High temperatures can reduce battery life and performance, while low temperatures can affect charging efficiency.
  • Do not immerse in water: The battery is not waterproof. Keep it dry and away from water or other liquids.
  • Use appropriate charging methods: Only use chargers designed for LiFePO4 batteries with the correct voltage and current settings. Refer to the charging section for details.
  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation around the battery, especially during charging and discharging, to prevent heat buildup.
  • Handling: The battery is heavy (approximately 54.3 lbs). Use proper lifting techniques or assistance to prevent injury.
  • California Proposition 65 Warning: This product may contain materials cautioned by California Proposition 65. For more information, refer to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.

3. Setup and Installation

3.1 Unpacking

Carefully remove the battery from its packaging. Inspect the battery for any visible damage. If damage is observed, do not attempt to install or use the battery and contact RELiON support immediately.

3.2 Mounting

Mount the RB200 battery in a secure, dry, and well-ventilated location. Ensure the battery is protected from direct sunlight, heat sources, and moisture. The battery should be mounted in an upright position to prevent stress on terminals and connections.

3.3 Electrical Connections

The RB200 is a 12.8V battery. It is designed for 12V systems and should not be connected in series to achieve higher voltages. Multiple RB200 batteries can be connected in parallel to increase overall capacity, provided proper balancing and wiring practices are followed.

  • Terminal Type: The RB200 uses Marine Terminals. Ensure your cables and connectors are compatible.
  • Cable Sizing: Use appropriately sized cables to handle the expected current draw. Undersized cables can lead to overheating and performance loss.
  • Polarity: Connect the positive (+) terminal of the battery to the positive (+) terminal of your system, and the negative (-) terminal to the negative (-) terminal. Reverse polarity will cause damage.
  • Tighten Connections: Ensure all terminal connections are tight to prevent resistance and heat buildup. Do not overtighten.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Charging

The RB200 battery should be charged using a LiFePO4 compatible charger.

  • Recommended Charge Voltage: 14.2V - 14.6V
  • Float Voltage: 13.6V
  • Maximum Charge Current: Refer to the battery label or RELiON specifications for the exact maximum charge current. Exceeding this can damage the battery.
  • Temperature: Avoid charging the battery below 0°C (32°F) or above 45°C (113°F). The internal BMS may prevent charging outside safe temperature ranges.

4.2 Discharging

The RB200 is designed for deep cycle applications, providing consistent power output.

  • Minimum Discharge Voltage: The internal BMS will protect the battery from over-discharge, typically cutting off power around 10V. Avoid regularly discharging below 11V for optimal battery life.
  • Maximum Continuous Discharge Current: Refer to the battery label or RELiON specifications. The BMS will protect against excessive current draw.
  • Temperature: The battery can be discharged between -20°C (-4°F) and 60°C (140°F).

4.3 Battery Management System (BMS)

The integrated BMS protects the battery from various conditions, including:

  • Over-charge protection
  • Over-discharge protection
  • Over-current protection
  • Short-circuit protection
  • High/low temperature protection

If the BMS activates, power to or from the battery may be temporarily cut off. This is a safety feature. The battery will typically resume normal operation once the fault condition is removed.

5. Maintenance

RELiON LiFePO4 batteries require minimal maintenance.

  • Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect the battery casing for any signs of damage, swelling, or leaks. Check terminal connections for corrosion or looseness.
  • Cleaning: Keep the battery terminals clean and free of dirt or debris. Use a dry cloth to wipe down the battery. Do not use solvents or harsh chemicals.
  • Storage: If storing the battery for an extended period, ensure it is charged to approximately 50-70% State of Charge (SOC) and stored in a cool, dry place. Avoid storing a fully discharged battery. Periodically check the voltage during long-term storage and recharge if necessary.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your RB200 battery, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Battery not charging
  • Charger not connected or faulty
  • BMS activated (over-discharge, low temperature)
  • Incorrect charger settings
  • Verify charger connection and functionality.
  • Allow battery to warm up if ambient temperature is too low.
  • Ensure charger is LiFePO4 compatible with correct voltage (14.2-14.6V).
No power output from battery
  • BMS activated (over-discharge, over-current, short circuit)
  • Loose or corroded terminals
  • Battery fully discharged
  • Remove load, check for short circuits, or charge battery.
  • Inspect and tighten terminal connections.
  • Charge the battery immediately.
Reduced battery capacity or runtime
  • Aging battery
  • Operating in extreme temperatures
  • Consistent deep discharges
  • This is normal over the battery's lifespan.
  • Operate within recommended temperature ranges.
  • Avoid regularly discharging below 11V.

If the problem persists after attempting these steps, please contact RELiON customer support for further assistance.
