4. Installation and Setup
Before beginning any maintenance, ensure the engine is cool and the spark plug wire is disconnected to prevent accidental starting.
4.1 Air Filter Replacement:
- Locate the air filter housing on your engine. It is typically a plastic cover secured by clips or screws.
- Open or remove the air filter housing cover.
- Carefully remove the old air filter and pre-filter. Note their orientation.

4.2 Spark Plug Replacement:
- Locate the spark plug on the engine. It will have a thick wire connected to it.
- Gently pull the spark plug wire boot off the spark plug.
- Use a spark plug wrench to loosen and remove the old spark plug. Turn counter-clockwise.
- Inspect the new spark plug for any damage. Ensure the gap is correct for your engine (refer to your engine's specific manual if unsure).
- Thread the new spark plug into the engine by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Once hand-tight, use the spark plug wrench to tighten it an additional 1/4 to 1/2 turn. Do not overtighten.
- Reconnect the spark plug wire boot firmly onto the new spark plug.
4.3 Fuel Filter Replacement:
Fuel filter replacement procedures can vary significantly by engine model. Consult your engine's specific service manual for detailed instructions. Generally, it involves:
- Locate the fuel line and existing fuel filter.
- Use clamps to pinch off the fuel line on both sides of the filter to prevent fuel leakage.
- Carefully remove the old fuel filter and install the new one, ensuring the flow direction arrow (if present) points towards the engine.
- Remove the clamps and check for leaks.
5. Maintenance
Regular maintenance of your air filter and spark plug is vital for engine performance and longevity. It is recommended to inspect your air filter regularly and replace it at least once per mowing season or every 25 hours of operation, whichever comes first. Spark plugs should typically be replaced annually or as recommended by your engine manufacturer.
