4. Setup

Your Decathlon BTWIN 900 Monster Truck Kid's Bike may require some assembly upon arrival. Follow these general steps:

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove all components from the packaging.
  2. Handlebar Installation: Attach the handlebar to the stem, ensuring it is centered and tightened securely.
  3. Pedal Installation: Identify left (L) and right (R) pedals. Thread them into the crank arms. Note that the left pedal has a reverse thread. Tighten firmly.
  4. Seat Post Adjustment: Insert the seat post into the frame. Adjust the saddle height so the child can comfortably touch the ground with their toes while seated. The saddle is height adjustable to grow with the child.
  5. Tire Inflation: Inflate tires to the recommended pressure indicated on the tire sidewall.
  6. Brake Check: Ensure both front (V-brake) and rear (coaster brake) are properly connected and functional. Adjust if necessary.
  7. Accessory Attachment: Install front and rear mudguards, bell, and reflectors.
  8. Optional Stabilisers/Parent Pole: If using, attach the Btwin 16" stabilisers or Btwin parent pole (sold separately) as per their instructions. These are designed for tool-free mounting.

5. Operating Instructions

Once the bike is assembled and safety checks are complete, the child can begin learning to ride.

  • Riding Position: The bike's design with a lowered frame makes it easy for children to get on and off. Ensure the child can comfortably reach the handlebars and pedals.
  • Braking: The bike features Stop Easy brakes. The front brake is operated by the lever on the handlebar. The rear brake is a coaster brake, activated by pedaling backward. Teach the child to use both brakes smoothly and gradually.
  • Steering: Guide the child to steer by gently turning the handlebars and leaning into turns.
  • Pedaling: Encourage consistent pedaling to maintain momentum. The full chain guard protects from the drivetrain.
  • Terrain: The front suspension fork provides comfort on uneven surfaces. The inflatable tires help navigate small obstacles like kerbs.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance will keep the bike in optimal condition and ensure safety.

  • Cleaning: Clean the bike regularly with mild soap and water. Avoid high-pressure washers directly on bearings. Dry thoroughly after washing.
  • Tire Pressure: Check tire pressure weekly. Under-inflated tires can lead to poor performance and punctures.
  • Brakes: Inspect brake pads for wear and replace if necessary. Ensure brake cables are not frayed and operate smoothly. Adjust brake tension if levers feel too loose or too tight.
  • Chain: Keep the chain clean and lubricated. Use a bicycle-specific chain lubricant.
  • Bolts and Fasteners: Periodically check all bolts, nuts, and quick releases for tightness. Pay special attention to wheel axles, handlebar stem, seat post clamp, and pedal connections.
  • General Inspection: Look for any signs of damage, cracks, or loose parts on the frame, wheels, and components. Address any issues promptly.
