OWLTRA OW-7 Electric Rodent Trap User Manual

Model: OW-7

Introduction

The OWLTRA OW-7 indoor/outdoor electric rodent trap provides a humane and effective solution for rodent elimination. Designed for versatility, it can be used both indoors and outdoors, especially in damp environments, thanks to its included waterproof cover. The trap offers flexible power options, operating on either 4 D batteries or a USB power source. An integrated sound and light alarm system notifies you when a rodent has been caught, simplifying the cleaning process.

Safety Information

Please read all safety instructions carefully before operating the device. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, or serious injury.

  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Do not touch the metal plates inside the trap when the device is powered on.
  • Always turn off the device and remove power sources (batteries or USB cable) before cleaning or handling a caught rodent.
  • Important: Do not immerse the upper electronic part of the trap in water. While the trap is designed for outdoor use with its waterproof cover, direct immersion of the electronic components will cause damage.
  • Use only specified power sources (4 D batteries or DC 5V 1A+ USB adapter/power bank).
  • Do not use the trap near flammable liquids or gases.
  • Ensure the trap is placed on a stable, dry surface.

Setup

Follow these steps to set up your OWLTRA OW-7 Electric Rodent Trap:

  1. Power Source Installation:
    • Batteries: Open the battery compartment. Insert 4 D-cell batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-). Close the compartment securely. Fully charged batteries can power approximately 60 kills.
    • USB Power: Alternatively, connect a DC 5V, 1A or higher USB power adapter or power bank to the USB port on the trap. The USB cable must remain connected for operation; it does not charge internal batteries.

  2. Baiting the Trap:

Locate the bait area. Lift the bait door. Using a toothpick or cotton swab (to avoid transferring human scent), apply a small amount of protein-rich bait, such as peanut butter, to the floor of the bait area, opposite the entrance. Do not overfill.

  3. Placement:

Place the trap in areas where rodent activity is suspected, such as along walls, in corners, or near food sources. Ensure the entrance is facing the wall. For outdoor use or in damp locations, always use the provided semi-transparent waterproof cover. Place the trap on a clean, dry surface, avoiding areas where it might be submerged in water.

Operating Instructions

Once set up, the OWLTRA OW-7 trap operates automatically:

  1. Activating the Trap: Turn the power switch to the "ON" position. An indicator light will confirm the trap is active.
  2. Rodent Entry and Elimination: Rodents are attracted by the bait and enter the trap. Upon contact with the electrified metal plates, a high-voltage shock is delivered, resulting in quick and humane elimination.
  3. Alarm Notification: After a successful kill, the trap will activate its sound and light alarm system. This notifies you that a rodent has been caught and the trap needs to be emptied.
  4. Disposal: Turn off the trap. Carefully slide out the kill chamber or open the trap to dispose of the rodent. Avoid direct contact with the rodent. Dispose of the rodent according to local regulations.
  5. Resetting the Trap: After disposal, clean the metal plates if necessary (see Maintenance section). Re-bait if needed, and turn the trap back on to resume operation.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your OWLTRA OW-7 trap:

  • Cleaning the Trap: After each kill, or periodically, turn off the trap and remove the power source. Use a damp cloth or paper towel to wipe down the metal plates and the interior of the kill chamber. For best results, wipe the zapping plates with isopropyl alcohol between successful zaps to prevent moisture buildup and ensure proper conductivity.
  • Bait Area Cleaning: Clean the bait area regularly to prevent mold or spoilage of bait.
  • Battery Replacement: When the trap's performance diminishes or the alarm indicates low power, replace all 4 D batteries with new ones.
  • Waterproof Cover Care: Keep the waterproof cover clean and free of debris. Ensure it is properly seated when using the trap outdoors.
  • Storage: When not in use, turn off the trap, remove batteries, clean it thoroughly, and store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your OWLTRA OW-7 trap, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Trap not activating/no power.
  • Batteries are dead or incorrectly installed.
  • USB cable not connected or power source insufficient.
  • Power switch is off.
  • Replace batteries with new D-cells, ensuring correct polarity.
  • Ensure USB cable is securely connected to a DC 5V, 1A+ adapter/power bank.
  • Turn the power switch to "ON".
Alarm sounds, but no rodent is found.
  • Rodent entered but escaped before shock.
  • Bait consumed without triggering the trap effectively.
  • Rodent only touched one metal plate.
  • Ensure bait is placed deep enough to encourage full entry.
  • Consider using a small non-conductive block (e.g., wood or plastic) to guide rodents to step on both metal plates if this issue persists.
  • Clean the metal plates thoroughly to ensure optimal conductivity.
Trap is not catching rodents.
  • Incorrect bait used or insufficient bait.
  • Trap placement is not optimal.
  • Rodents are wary of the trap.
  • Use protein-rich baits like peanut butter. Ensure bait is fresh.
  • Relocate the trap to areas with clear signs of rodent activity.
  • Allow time for rodents to become accustomed to the trap's presence before activating.
Trap is wet or exposed to water.
  • Improper outdoor placement.
  • Waterproof cover not used or incorrectly fitted.
  • Immediately turn off and remove power. Dry the trap thoroughly.
  • Ensure the waterproof cover is always used for outdoor or damp conditions.
  • Do not immerse the electronic part in water.
