TTartisan 50mm F1.4 Tilt Lens Instruction Manual

Compatible with Full-Frame Sony E-Mount Mirrorless Cameras

1. Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the proper use and care of your TTartisan 50mm F1.4 Tilt Lens. This lens is designed to offer unique creative control over the plane of focus, allowing for distinctive photographic and videographic effects. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the lens to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

2. Product Overview and Features

The TTartisan 50mm F1.4 Tilt Lens is a manual focus, manual aperture lens featuring a tilt mechanism. It is compatible with full-frame Sony E-Mount mirrorless cameras.

Key Features:

  • F1.4 Large Aperture: The wide maximum aperture allows for excellent low-light performance and creates a shallow depth of field for artistic background blur.
  • Tilt Function: This feature allows you to adjust the angle of the lens relative to the camera's sensor, enabling selective focus effects and the creation of miniature-like landscapes (often referred to as the "Lilliput effect").
  • Partial Focus Control: Achieve artistic results by keeping specific areas sharp while blurring others, without altering the aperture.
  • Rotation Mechanism: The lens can be rotated 360 degrees, providing flexibility in applying the tilt effect in any direction.
  • Video-Specific Optimization: The focus and aperture rings are designed to be compatible with most follow focus systems, catering to professional video shooting needs.
  • Durable Construction: Features a full metal body and metal lens cap for enhanced durability.

4. Setup

4.1 Mounting the Lens

  1. Align the red dot on the lens barrel with the corresponding red dot on your camera's lens mount.
  2. Gently insert the lens into the camera mount.
  3. Rotate the lens clockwise until it clicks into place, indicating it is securely locked.

4.2 Camera Settings for Fujifilm (if applicable)

Since this is a manual lens without electronic contacts, your Fujifilm camera may not detect its presence. To enable shooting, you must adjust a specific camera setting:

  1. Access your camera's Shooting Menu.
  2. Navigate to the 'SHOOT WITHOUT LENS' option.
  3. Set this option to 'ON'.

Failure to enable this setting will prevent the camera from taking pictures when the lens is mounted.

5. Operation

5.1 Manual Focus and Aperture

This lens features manual focus and manual aperture control. Use the focus ring to adjust sharpness and the aperture ring to control the depth of field and exposure. The aperture ring is de-clicked for smooth adjustments during video recording.

5.2 Using the Tilt Mechanism

The tilt mechanism allows you to pivot the front of the lens relative to the camera sensor. This changes the plane of focus, enabling creative effects such as selective focus or the miniature effect.

  1. Unlock Tilt: Locate the tilt lock knob on the side of the lens. Loosen this knob to allow the lens to tilt.
  2. Adjust Tilt Angle: Gently tilt the front of the lens to the desired angle. The lens can tilt up to 15 degrees.
  3. Lock Tilt: Tighten the tilt lock knob to secure the lens in position.

5.3 Using the Rotation Mechanism

The rotation mechanism allows you to change the direction of the tilt effect. This is useful for orienting the plane of focus horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

  1. Unlock Rotation: Locate the rotation lock knob (typically on the opposite side of the tilt knob). Loosen this knob.
  2. Rotate Lens: Rotate the lens barrel to the desired angle. The lens can rotate 360 degrees, with marked stops every 15 degrees up to 90 degrees for precise control.
  3. Lock Rotation: Tighten the rotation lock knob to secure the lens in position.

8. Troubleshooting

8.1 Image Softness at F1.4

At its widest aperture (F1.4), the TTartisan 50mm F1.4 Tilt Lens may exhibit some softness, particularly at the edges of the frame, and chromatic aberration. This is a characteristic of many fast prime lenses, especially at this price point. To achieve sharper images, stop down the aperture to F2.8 or narrower. Chromatic aberration also tends to reduce at smaller apertures.

8.2 Camera Not Detecting Lens

As a fully manual lens, your camera will not electronically recognize the TTartisan 50mm F1.4 Tilt Lens. If your camera does not allow you to take photos, ensure that the 'Shoot Without Lens' option (or equivalent, depending on your camera brand) is enabled in your camera's settings menu. Refer to Section 4.2 for specific instructions for Fujifilm cameras.

8.3 Difficulty with Manual Focus

Manual focus requires practice. Utilize your camera's focus peaking or magnification assist features to ensure accurate focus. These tools highlight in-focus areas or magnify the live view image, making precise manual focusing easier.

9. Warranty and Support

Your TTartisan 50mm F1.4 Tilt Lens comes with a limited warranty. Please refer to the included Warranty Card for specific terms, conditions, and duration of coverage. For technical support, service, or warranty claims, please contact TTartisan customer service through their official website or authorized distributors. Keep your proof of purchase for warranty validation.
