Memphis Audio MM500.4V 4-Channel Marine Amplifier Instruction Manual

Model: MM500.4V

Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your Memphis Audio MM500.4V 4-Channel Marine Amplifier. Please read this manual thoroughly before attempting installation or operation to ensure proper use and to prevent damage to the unit or connected components.

The MM500.4V is a high-performance 4-channel marine amplifier designed for robust audio output in marine environments. It delivers 125 watts per channel at 2 ohms, making it suitable for powering a wide range of marine speakers.

Safety Precautions

  • Always disconnect the vehicle's battery before installing or servicing any electrical components.
  • Ensure all wiring is properly insulated and secured to prevent short circuits and damage.
  • Mount the amplifier in a location that is protected from direct water exposure, excessive heat, and vibration.
  • Use appropriate gauge wiring for power and speaker connections as specified in this manual.
  • Consult a professional installer if you are unsure about any part of the installation process.

Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and longevity of your amplifier. Follow these steps carefully.

Mounting Location

Choose a mounting location that is dry, well-ventilated, and away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Ensure there is sufficient space around the amplifier for air circulation. The amplifier can be mounted horizontally or vertically.

Wiring Connections

Refer to the diagrams below for proper wiring. Use high-quality marine-grade wiring for all connections.

Power Connections

  • +12V (BATT): Connect directly to the positive terminal of the vehicle's battery using an appropriate gauge power cable (e.g., 8-gauge AMP KIT). Install an inline fuse (not included) within 18 inches of the battery.
  • GND (Ground): Connect to a clean, unpainted metal surface of the vehicle chassis. Ensure a solid, low-resistance connection.
  • REM (Remote Turn-On): Connect to the remote turn-on output of your head unit or a switched 12V source.

Input Connections (RCA or High-Level)

The MM500.4V supports both RCA (low-level) and high-level inputs.

  • RCA Input: Connect RCA cables from your head unit's pre-amp outputs to the amplifier's RCA input jacks (FR INPUT, RR INPUT).
  • High-Level Input: If your head unit does not have RCA outputs, use the provided high-level input harness. Connect the speaker wires from your head unit directly to the corresponding wires on the high-level input harness.

Speaker Connections

Connect your speakers to the amplifier's speaker output harness. Observe correct polarity (+ to + and - to -) for each speaker. The amplifier supports 4-channel stereo operation or 2-channel bridged operation.

  • 4-Channel Stereo: Connect one speaker to each of the four output channels (Front Left, Front Right, Rear Left, Rear Right).
  • 2-Channel Bridged: For higher power output to two speakers (e.g., subwoofers), bridge two channels. Refer to the wiring diagram on the amplifier's rear panel for specific bridging instructions.

Operating Instructions

Once installed, follow these steps to configure and operate your amplifier.

Initial Power-Up

  • After all connections are made, reconnect the vehicle's battery.
  • Turn on your head unit. The amplifier should power on, indicated by the power LED.

Gain Adjustment (Input Level)

The gain control matches the amplifier's input sensitivity to the output of your head unit. Incorrect gain settings can lead to distortion or reduced dynamic range.

  1. Set the amplifier's gain controls (FRONT LEVEL, REAR LEVEL) to their minimum (fully counter-clockwise) position.
  2. Set your head unit's volume to about 75% of its maximum.
  3. Play a dynamic piece of music.
  4. Slowly increase the amplifier's gain control until you hear slight distortion, then back it off slightly until the sound is clear.

Crossover Adjustment (X-OVER)

The built-in crossover allows you to filter frequencies sent to your speakers, optimizing sound quality and protecting speakers.

  • LPF (Low Pass Filter): Typically used for subwoofers, allowing only low frequencies to pass.
  • HPF (High Pass Filter): Typically used for full-range or component speakers, allowing only high frequencies to pass.
  • Adjust the X-OVER FREQ knob to set the desired crossover point based on your speaker's specifications.

Bass EQ Adjustment

The BASS EQ control allows for boosting low frequencies. Use this sparingly to avoid distortion and potential speaker damage.

  • Adjust the BASS EQ knob to achieve the desired bass response. Start with a minimal boost and increase gradually.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your amplifier.

  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe the amplifier's exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Connections: Annually check all power, ground, and speaker connections for tightness and corrosion. Loose connections can cause poor performance or damage.
  • Ventilation: Ensure that the amplifier's cooling fins are free from dust and debris to maintain proper heat dissipation.

Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your amplifier, consult the following table before contacting support.
