Please read all instructions carefully before using your Kenmore DU1040 FeatherLite Bagless Upright Vacuum. Keep this manual for future reference.
General Safety Precautions:
- Always unplug the vacuum cleaner from the electrical outlet before cleaning or servicing.
- Do not use the vacuum cleaner outdoors or on wet surfaces.

3. Setup
Assembly Instructions:
- Attach Handle: Insert the handle into the top of the vacuum body until it clicks securely into place.
- Connect Hose: Connect the flexible hose to the suction inlet on the main body of the vacuum. Ensure it is firmly attached.
- Attach Accessories: Place the attachment holder onto the vacuum body. Store the 3-in-1 combination tool and Pet HandiMate® tool on the holder for easy access.
- Power Cord: Wrap the power cord around the cord hooks for organized storage.
4. Operating Instructions
Powering On/Off:
Plug the power cord into a suitable electrical outlet. Press the power button located on the vacuum body to turn the unit on or off.
Height Adjustment:
The Kenmore DU1040 features 4 height adjustment levels to optimize airflow and cleaning efficiency for various surfaces. Locate the height adjustment dial on the front of the floor nozzle. Rotate the dial to select the appropriate setting:
- Low Carpet/Bare Floor: For hard floors and low-pile carpets.
- Medium Carpet: For medium-pile carpets.
- High Carpet: For high-pile carpets and shag rugs.

Using Attachments:
The flexible hose extends up to 7 feet for extended reach, making it ideal for cleaning stairs, upholstery, and hard-to-access areas.
- To use the hose: Detach the hose from the main vacuum body.
- Extension Wand: Attach the extension wand to the end of the hose for reaching high areas like ceilings or under furniture.
- 3-in-1 Combination Tool: Use the crevice tool for tight spaces, the dusting brush for delicate surfaces, and the upholstery tool for furniture.
- Pet HandiMate® Tool: This specialized tool is designed to effectively lift stubborn pet hair from upholstery, stairs, and other surfaces.

5. Maintenance
Emptying the Dust Cup:
The transparent dust cup allows you to see when it needs emptying. For optimal performance, empty the dust cup when debris reaches the 'Max Fill' line.
- Ensure the vacuum is unplugged.
- Press the dust cup release button and lift the dust cup away from the vacuum.
- Hold the dust cup over a trash receptacle and press the bottom release latch to empty the contents.
- Close the bottom latch and reattach the dust cup to the vacuum until it clicks securely.
Cleaning Filters:
Regularly clean the foam filter to maintain suction power. The filter type is a foam filter.
- Unplug the vacuum and remove the dust cup.
- Remove the foam filter from the dust cup assembly.
- Rinse the foam filter under cold water until the water runs clear.
- Allow the filter to air dry completely for at least 24 hours before reinserting. Do not use a dryer or other heating device.
Cleaning the Brush Roll:
Periodically check the brush roll for tangled hair or debris. Unplug the vacuum before performing any maintenance on the brush roll. Use scissors to carefully cut away any tangled hair or threads.
