3. Setup

3.1 Battery Installation

The LEAP Digital Chess Timer requires batteries for operation. To install or replace batteries:

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the bottom of the chess timer.
  2. Open the battery compartment cover.
  3. Insert the required batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

3.2 Initial Power-On

After battery installation, turn on the device using the ON/OFF switch located on the bottom. The timer will display the last saved settings, or default settings if powered on for the first time.

4. Operating Instructions

The chess timer offers various modes and functions for different game scenarios. Refer to the quick instructions on the bottom of the device for a quick overview.

4.1 Button Functions

  • +/UP Button: Short press to increase figures in setting mode. Long press to turn on/off the UP function.
  • -/Speaker Button: Short press to decrease figures in setting mode. Long press to turn on/off the alarm.
  • Play/Pause/Setting Button: Short press to start or pause the game. Long press to enter the setting mode.

4.2 Mode Selection

The chess clock has three basic programs: Time, Bonus, and Delay. You can quickly select the desired timing mode:

  1. Press the "+" or "-" button to cycle through the available modes (Time, Bonus, Delay).
  2. Once the desired mode is displayed, press the middle (Play/Pause/Setting) button to confirm and start the game with default settings.

4.3 Setting Time and Other Parameters

To customize time, bonus, or delay settings:

  1. Long press the middle (Play/Pause/Setting) button for 3 seconds to enter the setting mode. The numbers on the display will start flashing.
  2. While in setting mode, short press the middle button to switch between the digits (hours, minutes, seconds) you wish to adjust.
  3. Use the "+" or "-" buttons to increase or decrease the value of the flashing digit.
  4. Repeat for all desired settings (e.g., time for both players, bonus seconds, delay seconds).
  5. Long press the middle button for 3 seconds again to exit the setting mode. The numbers will stop flashing, and the settings will be saved.

4.4 Countdown and Count-up Functions

  • Countdown: In Time, Bonus, or Delay mode, the clock will count down from the set time. You can adjust the time during the game by entering setting mode.
  • Count-up (from zero): To use the timer as a pure count-up clock, first select the "Time" mode. Then, enter setting mode and set both players' times to "0:00:00". Long press the "+/UP" key until "UP" appears on the screen. Press the middle button to start counting up.
  • Keep Counting After Countdown Ends (UP Function): To enable this feature, long press the "+/UP" button for 3 seconds before starting the game. The "UP" icon will appear on the screen. When a player's countdown time runs out, the clock will automatically switch to count-up mode for that player, indicated by the "UP" icon and a "flag" icon. The "flag" icon appears only on the side that completes the countdown first.

4.5 Alarm Function

The alarm function provides audible alerts during the game:

  • To activate the alarm, long press the "-" button. A speaker icon will appear on the screen.
  • When active, a "beep" will sound at the last 10 seconds of the countdown.
  • During the last 5 seconds, the "beep" will sound continuously.
  • You can turn the alarm on or off at any time during the game by long pressing the "-" button.

4.6 Pre-set Basic Modes

The timer comes with convenient pre-set modes for quick game starts:

  • 1st Basic Pre-set (Time Mode): Both sides have a 5-minute countdown.
  • 2nd Basic Pre-set (Bonus Mode): Both sides have a 30-minute countdown with a 5-second bonus added after each move.
  • 3rd Basic Pre-set (Delay Mode): Both sides have a 45-minute countdown with a 10-second delay at the start of each turn.

Note: Countdown times for these pre-sets can be adjusted in setting mode.

  • Keep the chess timer clean by wiping it with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Avoid exposing the device to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, or moisture.

  • If storing for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.

7. Troubleshooting

7.1 Resetting to Default State

If the device is not functioning as expected or you wish to clear all custom settings:

  • Remove the battery from the compartment.
  • Wait for a few seconds.
  • Reinsert the battery. The timer should now be restored to its default factory settings.
