1. Introduction

2. Setup

2.1 Unpacking and Placement

Carefully remove the sewing machine from its packaging. Place the machine on a stable, flat surface with adequate lighting. Ensure the power cord can reach an electrical outlet without strain.

2.2 Power Connection

2.3 Bobbin Winding

  1. Place a spool of thread on the spool pin.
  2. Guide the thread through the bobbin winding tension disc.
  3. Place an empty bobbin onto the bobbin winder spindle.

  5. Push the bobbin winder spindle to the right.
  6. Gently press the foot controller to start winding. The machine will stop automatically when the bobbin is full.
  7. Cut the thread and return the bobbin winder spindle to the left.

  1. Raise the needle to its highest position using the handwheel.
  2. Place a spool of thread on the spool pin.
  3. Guide the thread through the upper thread guides.
  4. Pass the thread down through the tension discs and up around the take-up lever.
  5. Guide the thread down to the needle area.
  6. Use the built-in needle threader to effortlessly thread the eye of the needle.

2.5 Inserting the Bobbin

The SINGER Elite ME457 features a top drop-in bobbin system for easy access and monitoring.

  1. Open the bobbin cover plate.
  2. Insert the wound bobbin into the bobbin case, ensuring the thread unwinds in the correct direction (usually counter-clockwise).
  3. Guide the bobbin thread through the tension spring.
  4. Replace the bobbin cover plate.
  5. Bring up the bobbin thread by holding the upper thread and turning the handwheel towards you, lowering and raising the needle.

  • Turn the Stitch Selector Dial (labeled 'S' on the machine) to the desired stitch pattern.

  • The Stitch Length Dial controls the length of each stitch. Turn it to increase or decrease stitch length.

  1. Attach the One-Step Buttonhole Foot.
  2. Place the button into the buttonhole foot.
  3. Select the buttonhole stitch pattern on the Stitch Selector Dial.
  4. The machine will automatically sew a buttonhole perfectly sized for your button.

3.4 Drop Feed Function

The drop feed mechanism allows for free-motion quilting, monogramming, and button sewing without fabric feed. To activate:

  • Locate the drop feed lever, typically at the back or side of the free arm.
  • Move the lever to lower the feed dogs.
  • Remember to raise the feed dogs for regular sewing.

3.5 Using the Free Arm

The free arm is ideal for sewing small, tubular items like cuffs, sleeves, and pant hems. To use:

  • Remove the accessory storage compartment from the front of the machine.
  • Slide the fabric over the free arm.
