1. Introduction
Thank you for choosing the SOBO SF-550F External Aquarium Filter Pump. This hang-on-back filter system is designed to provide efficient mechanical, biological, and chemical filtration for your aquarium, ensuring a clean and healthy environment for your aquatic life. Please read this manual carefully before installation and operation to ensure proper use and maintenance.
2. Product Overview
The SOBO SF-550F is a high-performance external filter featuring a slim design, replaceable carbon cartridge, and sponge. It is energy-saving, eco-friendly, and operates with low noise. Its design allows for easy maintenance and cleaning, making it suitable for various aquarium types. A built-in water surface skimmer enhances water clarity by removing surface film.

3. Safety Instructions
Please read and follow these safety instructions carefully to prevent accidents and ensure safe operation:
- Ensure the power supply voltage matches the specifications indicated on the product label (AC 220-240V 50Hz).
- Before use, inspect the filter for any signs of damage. Do not use if damaged.
- The filter must be filled with water before plugging it into a power outlet.
- Do not run the pump dry. Running the pump without water will cause damage.
- The filter must be securely hung on the back or side of the aquarium.
- The inlet tube should be positioned vertically and as close to the water surface as possible for optimal performance.
- Keep the power socket out of reach of children.
- Never touch the power plug with wet hands. Always unplug the filter before performing any maintenance or cleaning.
4. Setup
- Unpack the Filter: Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Check for any missing or damaged parts.
- Assemble Components: Refer to Figure 2.1 to assemble the inlet and outlet tubes, surface skimmer, and other accessories onto the main filter unit. Ensure all connections are secure.
- Position the Filter: Hang the filter securely on the back or side of your aquarium. Ensure it is stable and level.
- Adjust Inlet Tube: Position the inlet tube vertically inside the aquarium, ensuring the bottom strainer is submerged and the surface skimmer is at the water level.
- Fill with Water: Before connecting power, manually fill the filter chamber with aquarium water until it is full. This primes the pump and prevents dry running.
- Connect Power: Once the filter is filled with water and securely installed, plug the power cord into a suitable electrical outlet.

5. Operating Instructions
- Starting the Filter: After completing the setup and filling the filter with water, plug it in. The pump should start automatically, drawing water from the aquarium and returning filtered water.
- Adjusting Flow: The filter may have an adjustable flow valve (refer to Figure 2.1). Rotate the valve to increase or decrease the water flow rate as needed for your aquarium.
- Surface Skimmer Operation: The integrated surface skimmer will automatically draw in water from the surface, removing oily films and debris. Ensure the skimmer intake is at the water level for effective operation.

6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for the optimal performance and longevity of your SOBO SF-550F filter. Always unplug the filter from the power outlet before performing any maintenance.
6.1 Cleaning Filter Media
- Unplug the filter and carefully remove it from the aquarium.
- Open the filter housing.
- Remove the filter sponge and carbon cartridge.
- Rinse the filter sponge thoroughly with old aquarium water (from a water change) to preserve beneficial bacteria. Do not use tap water, as chlorine can kill these bacteria.
- Replace the carbon cartridge every 2-4 weeks, or as needed, as activated carbon becomes saturated over time.
- Reassemble the filter in reverse order, ensuring all components are correctly seated.

6.2 Cleaning Impeller and Housing
Periodically, inspect and clean the impeller and its housing to prevent blockages and maintain optimal flow. Remove the impeller cover and carefully clean the impeller and shaft with a small brush.
6.3 Cleaning Surface Skimmer
The surface skimmer may accumulate debris. Gently remove and clean the skimmer components to ensure it functions effectively.
7. Troubleshooting
- Filter Not Starting:
- Check if the power cord is securely plugged in.
- Ensure the filter chamber is completely filled with water.
- Inspect the impeller for any obstructions or damage.
- Reduced Water Flow:
- Filter media may be clogged. Clean or replace the sponge and carbon cartridge.
- Impeller or intake tubes may be blocked by debris. Clean thoroughly.
- Ensure the inlet tube and surface skimmer are not obstructed.
- Excessive Noise:
- Check if the impeller is properly seated and free of debris.
- Ensure the filter is securely mounted and not vibrating against the aquarium.
- Verify the filter is completely filled with water and no air is trapped inside.
- Water Leaking:
- Check all connections and seals for proper fit.
- Ensure the filter housing is closed correctly.
