4. Setup and Installation
- Placement: Position the sand filter pump on a firm, level surface near your above-ground pool. Ensure it is easily accessible for maintenance and protected from direct weather exposure if possible.
- Adding Filter Media: Carefully add the recommended amount of filter sand (42 lbs) or filter balls into the tank. Ensure the standpipe is centered during this process to prevent sand from entering it.
- Connecting Hoses: Connect the pool's skimmer/intake hose to the pump's inlet and the pump's outlet to the filter tank's inlet. Connect the filter tank's return outlet to the pool's return jet. Secure all connections with clamps to prevent leaks. The system includes 1.25"/1.5" NPSM threaded connections.
- Priming the Pump: Before starting, ensure the pump is primed by filling the pump basket with water until it overflows. Secure the lid.
- Electrical Connection: Plug the 3-prong power cable into a grounded electrical outlet. Ensure the outlet is protected by a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI).

5. Operating Instructions
The XtremepowerUS Sand Filter Pump features a multi-port valve with several settings and an integrated digital timer for convenient operation.
5.1 Multi-Port Valve Settings
The 4-way valve allows you to select different operational modes. Always turn off the pump before changing the valve position.
- FILTER: This is the standard operating mode for daily filtration. Water is pumped through the sand bed, filtered, and returned to the pool.
- BACKWASH: Used to clean the filter media. Water flow is reversed, flushing accumulated debris out through the waste port.
- RINSE: Used after backwashing to flush any remaining debris from the filter lines before returning to FILTER mode.
- WASTE: Drains water directly from the pool, bypassing the filter. Useful for lowering pool water level or vacuuming heavy debris directly to waste.
- RE-CIRCULATE: Circulates pool water without passing it through the filter. Useful for distributing chemicals without filtering.
- CLOSED: Stops water flow completely. Use this setting when performing maintenance on the pump or filter.
- WINTER: Prepares the system for winter storage.
5.2 Digital Timer Function
The integrated digital timer allows you to program the pump's run time for automated operation, ensuring consistent filtration.

Image 5.1: Smart Timer Control panel.
Use the 'TIMES' button to select the desired operating duration (e.g., 2h, 4h, 6h, up to 24h). The pump will run for the selected duration and then automatically shut off. Press 'ON/OFF' to manually start or stop the pump.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your sand filter pump.
6.1 Backwashing the Filter
Backwashing is crucial for cleaning the filter sand. Perform backwashing when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI above its clean starting pressure, or when pool water flow is noticeably reduced.
- Turn off the pump.
- Set the multi-port valve to 'BACKWASH'.
- Turn on the pump and run until the water flowing out of the waste port is clear (typically 2-3 minutes).
- Turn off the pump.
- Set the multi-port valve to 'RINSE'.
- Turn on the pump and run for 30-60 seconds.
- Turn off the pump.
- Set the multi-port valve back to 'FILTER'.
- Turn on the pump to resume normal filtration.
6.2 Cleaning the Pump Basket
The pump's pre-filter basket collects larger debris before it reaches the filter. Check and clean it regularly.
- Turn off the pump and disconnect power.
- Close any necessary valves to prevent water flow from the pool.
- Remove the transparent lid of the pump basket.
- Remove and empty the basket. Rinse it thoroughly.
- Inspect the O-ring on the lid for damage and ensure it is clean. Lubricate if necessary.
- Replace the basket and secure the lid tightly.
- Restore power and open valves before restarting the pump.
6.3 Winterization
Before freezing temperatures arrive, prepare your pump and filter for winter storage.
- Perform a final backwash and rinse.
- Turn off the pump and disconnect power.
- Drain all water from the pump, filter tank, and hoses. Remove drain plugs.
- Disconnect all hoses and store them in a dry, protected area.
- Remove the pressure gauge and store it indoors.
- Store the pump and filter tank in a dry, frost-free location.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your sand filter pump, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
- Low Water Flow:
- Check the pump basket for debris and clean if necessary.
- Ensure all valves are fully open and hoses are not kinked.
- Check the pressure gauge; if high, backwash the filter.
- Verify the water level in the pool is adequate for proper skimming.
- Cloudy Pool Water:
- Backwash the filter.
- Check pool chemical balance (pH, chlorine).
- Ensure the pump is running for sufficient duration daily.
- Consider adding a clarifier or flocculant if needed.
- Pump Not Starting:
- Check power connection and GFCI breaker.
- Ensure the timer is set correctly or press the ON/OFF button.
- Inspect for any obstructions in the impeller.
- Leaks:
- Tighten all hose clamps and connections.
- Inspect O-rings and gaskets for damage and replace if necessary.
