4. Setup and Installation
4.1 Pre-Installation Checklist
- Ensure you have all necessary components: CPU, RAM, storage devices (M.2 SSDs), graphics card, power supply, and PC case.
- Gather tools: Phillips head screwdriver, zip ties, anti-static wrist strap.
- Work in a clean, well-lit, and static-free environment.
4.2 Physical Installation
- Install CPU: Carefully open the CPU socket retention arm. Align the triangular marker on your Intel LGA 1700 CPU with the marker on the socket. Gently place the CPU into the socket without forcing it. Close the retention arm to secure the CPU.
- Install CPU Cooler: Follow the instructions provided with your CPU cooler. Ensure proper thermal paste application and secure mounting.
- Install RAM: Open the clips on the DDR5 DIMM slots. Align the notch on the RAM stick with the key in the slot. Press firmly on both ends until the clips snap into place.
- Install M.2 SSDs: Locate the M.2 slots. Remove the M.2 heatsink/cover if present. Insert the M.2 SSD at an angle into the slot. Secure it with the provided screw or retention mechanism. Reattach the heatsink/cover.
- Mount Motherboard: Install standoffs in your PC case according to the ATX form factor. Carefully place the motherboard onto the standoffs, aligning the I/O shield with the case opening. Secure the motherboard with screws.
- Install Graphics Card (GPU): Open the PCIe slot retention clip. Insert your GPU firmly into the top PCIe x16 slot until it clicks into place. Secure the GPU to the case with screws.
- Connect Power: Connect the 24-pin ATX power connector and the 8-pin (or 4+4-pin) CPU power connector from your power supply to the motherboard. Connect power to your GPU if required.
- Connect Case Cables: Connect front panel headers (power button, reset button, USB, audio), fan headers, and RGB headers to their respective pins on the motherboard. Refer to the motherboard diagram for precise locations.

4.3 BIOS Update for 14th Generation Intel CPUs
Important Note for 14th Gen Intel CPU Users:
The NZXT N7 Z790 motherboard, when shipped, may not have a BIOS version that natively supports 14th Generation Intel processors. Unlike some other motherboards (e.g., NZXT N7 Z690), the N7 Z790 does not feature a dedicated BIOS Flashback button on the rear I/O. This means you cannot update the BIOS without a compatible CPU already installed.
If you are installing a 14th Gen Intel CPU, you will likely need a 12th or 13th Generation Intel CPU to first boot the system and update the BIOS to a version that supports 14th Gen processors. After the BIOS update, you can then swap to your 14th Gen CPU.
Please refer to the official NZXT support website for the latest BIOS updates and detailed instructions on how to perform the update using a compatible CPU.
5. Operating Your Motherboard
5.1 Initial Boot and OS Installation
After completing the physical installation, connect your monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Power on your system. Access the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing DEL or F2 during startup) to configure boot order and other settings. Install your preferred operating system (e.g., Windows 10/11) from a bootable USB drive or optical media.
5.2 Driver Installation
After OS installation, install all necessary drivers for your motherboard components. These include chipset drivers, network drivers (LAN/WiFi), audio drivers, and graphics card drivers. Drivers can be found on the NZXT support website or the respective component manufacturer's websites.
5.3 NZXT CAM Software
Download and install the NZXT CAM software from the official NZXT website. NZXT CAM allows you to monitor system performance, control RGB lighting effects, and manage fan speeds for connected NZXT devices and the motherboard's integrated controllers.

6. Maintenance
- Dust Removal: Regularly clean dust from your PC case and motherboard components using compressed air. Ensure the system is powered off and unplugged before cleaning.
- Driver Updates: Periodically check the NZXT support website and component manufacturers' websites for updated drivers and BIOS versions to ensure optimal performance and compatibility.
- Cable Management: Ensure cables are neatly routed to promote better airflow and prevent interference with components.
7. Troubleshooting
- No Display/Boot:
- Verify all power cables (24-pin ATX, 8-pin CPU, GPU power) are securely connected.
- Ensure RAM modules are fully seated in their slots. Try reseating them or testing with one stick at a time.
- Check that the graphics card is properly seated in its PCIe slot.
- If using a 14th Gen Intel CPU, confirm that the BIOS has been updated to a compatible version using a 12th or 13th Gen CPU first.
- System Instability/Crashes:
- Ensure all drivers are up to date.
- Check CPU and GPU temperatures using monitoring software like NZXT CAM. Overheating can cause instability.
- Verify RAM stability using memory diagnostic tools.
- Peripheral Issues (USB, Audio, Network):
- Ensure relevant drivers are installed and up to date.
- Check physical connections of cables to the motherboard headers.
