Introduction
Accurately measuring low current is essential to diagnosing parasitic battery drains on vehicles. The ES 683 measures DC currents down to 1mA and will produce repeatable/dependable readings, making it an ideal tool for automotive diagnostics.
What's in the Box
- ES 683 High Accuracy Low Current Clamp Meter
- Zippered storage case
- Instructions
Setup
Before first use, ensure the device has a fresh 9V battery installed. The device is designed for ease of use with minimal setup required. Ensure the clamp meter is clean and free of debris before operation.

Image: The ES 683 High Accuracy Low Current Clamp Meter. It features a gray body with a black control panel. The panel includes buttons for 'ZERO/LIGHT', 'POWER', and 'HOLD/MEM/MR', along with an LCD display. The clamp mechanism is at the top, with an arrow indicating current direction.
Operating Instructions
Follow these steps for accurate current measurement, particularly for parasitic draws:
- Power On: Press the POWER button to turn on the clamp meter. The LCD display will illuminate.
- Zeroing the Clamp: With the clamp open and not around any conductor, press the ZERO/LIGHT button once. This calibrates the meter to zero, ensuring accurate readings.
- Backlight (Optional): To activate the LCD backlight, press and hold the ZERO/LIGHT button.
- Connecting to Vehicle: For parasitic draw tests, ensure the vehicle has been sitting for at least one hour to allow all modules to power down. Connect the clamp around either the negative or positive battery cable. Ensure the arrow on the clamp points in the correct direction relative to current flow (e.g., away from the battery for negative cable).
- Reading Measurement: Observe the milliamp (mA) reading on the LCD display. A reading of 50mA or less is generally considered within specification for most vehicles.
- Hold/Memory: Use the HOLD/MEM/MR button to hold the current reading or access memory functions if available.
Note: The provided video demonstrates the use of the ES 683 for checking parasitic battery drain on a vehicle. It shows the process of powering on, zeroing the device, and taking a reading on the negative battery cable, indicating a low milliamp draw within acceptable limits.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Store the clamp meter in its zippered storage case in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Battery Replacement: Replace the 9V battery when the low battery indicator appears on the display to ensure continued accuracy.
Troubleshooting
- Inaccurate Readings: Ensure the clamp is properly zeroed before each measurement. Verify the battery is not low.
- No Display/Power: Check the 9V battery. Ensure it is correctly installed and has sufficient charge.
- Fluctuating Readings: Ensure the cable being measured is isolated and not influenced by other magnetic fields. Allow the vehicle to fully "sleep" before testing for parasitic draws.
