- Press the Reference button (or similar icon) to switch between the front, rear, or end reference points. The active reference point is indicated on the LCD.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1. Single Distance Measurement
- Point the laser at the target.
- Press the MEASURE button (usually the main button in the center) once to activate the laser.
- Press the MEASURE button again to take the measurement. The distance will be displayed on the LCD.
5.2. Continuous Measurement (Tracking)
- Enter continuous measurement mode (often by pressing the MODE button and then selecting the mode, or a dedicated button).
- Move the device slowly towards or away from the target. The display will update in real-time, showing the current distance, as well as minimum and maximum values.
- Press the MEASURE button again to exit continuous measurement.
5.3. Area Measurement

Figure 3: Display illustrating different measurement modes: Distance, Area, Volume, and Pythagoras. The Area Measurement icon shows a rectangle being measured.
- Select the Area Measurement mode (usually by pressing the MODE button until the area icon appears).
- Measure the first side (e.g., length) by pressing the MEASURE button.
- Measure the second side (e.g., width) by pressing the MEASURE button again.
- The device will automatically calculate and display the area.
5.4. Volume Measurement

Figure 4: The device display showing measurements for length, width, and height (a, b, c) to calculate the volume of a room. An example calculation is shown below the device.
- Select the Volume Measurement mode (usually by pressing the MODE button until the volume icon appears).
- Measure the length by pressing the MEASURE button.
- Measure the width by pressing the MEASURE button.
- Measure the height by pressing the MEASURE button.
- The device will automatically calculate and display the volume.
5.5. Pythagorean Measurement

Figure 5: An illustration of Pythagorean measurement, showing how the device calculates an unknown side (x) of a right-angled triangle based on two measured sides (a and b).
- Select the Pythagorean Measurement mode (usually by pressing the MODE button until the Pythagorean icon appears).
- Follow the on-screen prompts to measure the required sides of the triangle. For example, for a single Pythagorean mode, you might measure the hypotenuse and one leg to calculate the other leg.
- The device will automatically calculate and display the unknown distance.
5.6. Data Storage

Figure 6: The device display showing multiple stored measurements, indicating its data storage capability for convenient review.
The device can store up to 20 groups of measurements. Refer to the device's specific buttons (e.g., SAVE/RECALL button) to save current measurements or recall previously stored data.
5.7. Mute Setting

Figure 7: A user holding the LOMVUM Laser Distance Meter in a quiet environment like a library, highlighting the utility of the mute function for discreet operation.
The mute setting allows you to turn the measurement beep sound on or off. This is useful for operating in quiet environments such as libraries or offices.
- Press the MUTE button (or similar icon) to toggle the sound on or off.
5.8. Electronic Angle Sensor
The integrated electronic angle sensor helps in finding the horizontal direction and improves the accuracy of vertical bevel measurements. The angle will be displayed on the LCD.

Figure 8: The device features two bubble levels, visible on the display, which assist in achieving accurate horizontal alignment for measurements.
6. Maintenance
6.1. Cleaning
- Wipe the device with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Ensure the laser lens is clean and free of dust for accurate measurements. Use a soft, lint-free cloth.
6.2. Storage
- Store the device in a cool, dry place when not in use.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to strong sunlight, as this can weaken laser energy and affect accuracy.
- Remove batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
6.3. Water and Dust Resistance
The LOMVUM M40-50M has an IP54 rating, meaning it is protected against dust ingress and splashing water from any direction. While it offers protection, avoid submerging the device in water.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Device does not power on. | Batteries are dead or incorrectly inserted. | Replace batteries with new AAA alkaline batteries, ensuring correct polarity. |
| Inaccurate measurements in bright conditions. | Strong sunlight weakens laser energy. | Avoid using in direct strong sunlight. Use in shaded areas or when light is weak. |
| Laser beam is not visible. | Environmental conditions (bright light) or dirty lens. | Move to a less bright area. Clean the laser lens with a soft, lint-free cloth. |
| Measurement error displayed. | Target surface is too reflective, too transparent, or too far/close. | Ensure target surface is opaque and within the measuring range (0.1 to 393 feet). Try measuring to a different surface. |
