As a barebone system, the HUNSN RJ09 requires the installation of essential components before initial use.

3.1 Required Components (Not Included)

  • System Memory (RAM): 2 x DDR4 SO-DIMM modules (3200MT/s recommended, max. 32GB total). Use reputable brands for optimal compatibility and stability.
  • Storage Drive:
    • 1 x mSATA SSD
    • 1 x 2.5-inch SSD/HDD
Use reputable brands for optimal compatibility and stability.
  • Operating System: A compatible operating system (e.g., FreeBSD-based router systems like pfSense Plus, OPNsense; Linux distributions; Windows OS).

3.2 Installation Steps

  1. Open the Chassis: Carefully remove the screws securing the bottom panel of the RJ09 chassis.
  2. Install RAM: Locate the two SO-DIMM slots. Insert the DDR4 RAM modules firmly until they click into place.
  3. Install Storage:
    • For mSATA SSD: Insert the mSATA drive into its designated slot and secure it with the provided screw.
    • For 2.5-inch SSD/HDD: Connect the SATA data and power cables to the drive and secure the drive within the chassis.
  4. Close the Chassis: Reattach the bottom panel and secure it with screws.
  5. Connect Peripherals:
    • Connect a monitor to the HDMI port.
    • Connect a keyboard and mouse to the USB ports.
    • Connect the power adapter to the DC_IN port and plug it into a power outlet.
  6. Install Operating System:
    • Power on the device.
    • Access the UEFI BIOS (typically by pressing Del or Esc during boot).
    • Configure boot device priority to install your chosen operating system from a USB drive or other bootable media.
    • Proceed with the operating system installation as per its specific instructions.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Power On/Off

  • Power On: Press the Power ON/OFF button located on the front panel. The device also supports hardware auto power-on, which is enabled by default.
  • Power Off: Perform a graceful shutdown through your operating system. Alternatively, press and hold the Power ON/OFF button for several seconds to force a shutdown.

4.2 Network Configuration

The RJ09 features six 2.5GbE LAN ports (ETH0-ETH5). Configuration of these ports will depend on the operating system and firewall software installed. Refer to the documentation of your chosen OS/software for detailed network setup instructions.

4.3 System Compatibility

The device supports UEFI boot only and is compatible with:

  • FreeBSD-based router systems (kernel 5.10.x and above), such as pfSense Plus and OPNsense.
  • Various Linux distributions.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cooling

The HUNSN RJ09 utilizes a fanless design for silent operation. The aluminum chassis acts as a large heatsink. Ensure adequate airflow around the device to prevent overheating, especially during prolonged high-load operations. While designed to dissipate heat efficiently, placing the device in a well-ventilated area is recommended. The chassis includes 80x80mm holes, supporting the addition of an optional 12V 3-pin fan for enhanced cooling if desired.

5.2 Cleaning

To clean the exterior of the device, use a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using liquid cleaners or abrasive materials, as these can damage the finish or internal components.

6. Troubleshooting

  • No Power:
    • Verify the power adapter is securely connected to both the device and a working power outlet.
    • Ensure the power cord is not damaged.
  • No Display Output:
    • Check the HDMI cable connection to both the device and the monitor.
    • Ensure the monitor is powered on and set to the correct input source.
  • System Fails to Boot / OS Installation Issues:
    • Confirm that RAM and storage drives are correctly installed and seated firmly.
    • Ensure that the RAM and storage components are from reputable brands, as compatibility issues can arise with generic or low-quality components.
    • Verify that your bootable media (e.g., USB drive) is properly created and the BIOS/UEFI boot order is configured correctly.
    • If experiencing issues with UEFI settings, use the CLR CMOS button (if available and accessible) to reset BIOS settings to default.
  • Network Connectivity Problems:
    • Check all Ethernet cable connections.
    • Verify network driver installation within your operating system.
    • Review your operating system's network configuration settings.
