Thule Hull-a-Port XTR Kayak Roof Rack Instruction Manual

Model: 848004

1. Overview

The Thule Hull-a-Port XTR is a versatile and lockable kayak rack designed to securely transport one or two kayaks on your vehicle's roof. Its innovative dual-position design allows it to transform from a J-cradle to a two-boat stacker, offering flexibility for different carrying needs. When not in use, the uprights conveniently fold flat to reduce vehicle height and improve aerodynamics.

Key Features:

  • Dual Position Design: Transforms from a J-cradle to a two-boat stacker, accommodating one or two kayaks.
  • Integrated StrapCatch: Facilitates easy strap management during kayak loading and unloading.
  • Folds Flat: Uprights fold flat when not in use, reducing vehicle height for improved clearance and fuel efficiency.
  • Pre-Assembled: Ready for installation right out of the box.
  • Lockable: Secures to load bars using Thule’s One-Key System Lock Cylinders (sold separately) for theft prevention.

2. Safety Information

Always prioritize safety when installing and using the Thule Hull-a-Port XTR. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in property damage, personal injury, or death.

  • Read and understand all instructions before installation and use.
  • Ensure the rack is securely attached to your vehicle's load bars according to the instructions.
  • Verify that your vehicle's roof and load bars have adequate weight capacity for the rack and kayaks.
  • Always secure kayaks with the provided straps and ensure they are taut before driving.
  • Check all fasteners and straps regularly, especially before and during long trips.
  • Drive at reduced speeds, especially on rough roads, and avoid sudden maneuvers.
  • Be aware of increased vehicle height and width when carrying kayaks, particularly when entering garages, drive-thrus, or low-clearance areas.

3. Components

The Thule Hull-a-Port XTR package includes the following components:

  • Thule Hull-a-Port XTR Kayak Rack unit(s)
  • Mounting hardware for load bars
  • Load straps for securing kayaks
  • Bow and stern tie-downs
  • Instruction manual

4. Installation

4.1 Pre-Installation Checklist

  • Ensure your vehicle has a compatible roof rack system (load bars). The Hull-a-Port XTR is compatible with Thule WingBar, SquareBar Evo, ProBar Evo, and Thule Xsporter Pro load bars, and universal mounting up to 80.5mm wide load bars.
  • Clean the surface of your load bars where the rack will be mounted.
  • Gather all components and tools required for installation.

4.2 Mounting the Rack to Load Bars

The Thule Hull-a-Port XTR comes pre-assembled for ease of installation. Follow these general steps to mount the rack to your vehicle's load bars:

  1. Position the Hull-a-Port XTR unit on your vehicle's load bars. Ensure proper spacing between the front and rear units for optimal kayak support.
  2. Engage the mounting clamps around the load bars. The rack is designed for universal fit on various bar types.
  3. Tighten the mounting hardware securely. Refer to the detailed diagrams in the included printed manual for specific torque settings and tightening sequences.
  4. Once tightened, ensure the rack units are stable and do not move.
  5. If using Thule One-Key System Lock Cylinders (sold separately), install them into the designated lock housings to secure the rack to your load bars.

5. Operation

5.1 Folding and Unfolding the Rack

The Hull-a-Port XTR features a convenient folding mechanism to reduce its profile when not in use.

  1. To unfold: Locate the release lever on the side of the rack base. Press or pull the lever (depending on the specific model's mechanism) and carefully lift the uprights until they lock into the vertical J-cradle position. Ensure both uprights are securely locked.
  2. To fold flat: Locate the same release lever. Press or pull the lever and gently push the uprights downwards until they lie flat against the rack base. Ensure they are securely latched in the folded position.

5.2 Loading and Securing Kayaks

Properly loading and securing your kayaks is crucial for safe transport.

  1. Single Kayak (J-Cradle Position): Place the kayak on its side into the J-cradle. Use the provided load straps, threading them over the kayak and through the rack's integrated StrapCatch, then securely tighten.
  2. Two Kayaks (Stacker Position): Convert the rack to the stacker position. Place the first kayak flat on the load bars next to the rack. Place the second kayak on its side against the uprights. Use load straps to secure both kayaks together and to the rack.
  3. Bow and Stern Tie-Downs: Always use bow and stern tie-downs to prevent fore and aft movement of the kayaks, especially at highway speeds. Attach one end to the kayak's bow/stern and the other to a secure point on your vehicle's front/rear (e.g., tow hooks, frame).
  4. Final Check: Before driving, double-check all straps and tie-downs for tightness. Gently shake the kayaks to ensure they are firmly secured.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your Thule Hull-a-Port XTR.

  • Cleaning: Clean the rack regularly with mild soap and water, especially after exposure to salt water or harsh weather conditions. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect all components for signs of wear, damage, or corrosion. Pay close attention to straps, buckles, and mounting hardware.
  • Fasteners: Check and re-tighten all mounting bolts and screws as needed. Loose fasteners can compromise safety.
  • Storage: When not in use for extended periods, store the rack in a dry, protected area to prevent environmental damage.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Thule Hull-a-Port XTR, consider the following:

  • Rack feels loose: Re-check all mounting hardware and ensure it is tightened to the manufacturer's specifications. Verify that the rack is correctly seated on your load bars.
  • Excessive wind noise: Ensure the rack is folded flat when not carrying kayaks. Check that all components are securely fastened and not vibrating. Adjust the position of the rack on the load bars if possible.
  • Difficulty folding/unfolding: Ensure the release lever is fully engaged. Check for any obstructions or debris in the hinge mechanism. Lubricate moving parts with a silicone-based spray if necessary.
  • Kayaks shifting during transport: Re-tighten all load straps and bow/stern tie-downs. Ensure kayaks are properly seated in the cradles or against the stacker uprights.
