5. Setup and Installation

5.1 Recommended Placement

For optimal protection, install smoke detectors in every sleeping room and on every level of your home, including the basement. For homes with multiple levels, install a smoke detector in the hallway outside of sleeping areas.

  • Install on the ceiling in the center of the room or hallway.
  • If ceiling mounting is not possible, install on a wall between 4 and 12 inches (10-30 cm) from the ceiling.
  • Avoid placing detectors near windows, doors, or air vents where drafts could interfere with smoke detection.
  • Keep detectors at least 20 feet (6 meters) away from cooking appliances to minimize false alarms.

5.2 Installation Steps

  1. Choose a suitable location according to the recommended placement guidelines.
  2. Use the mounting bracket as a template to mark the screw holes on the ceiling or wall.
  3. Drill holes at the marked positions and insert the plastic anchors.
  4. Attach the mounting bracket to the ceiling or wall using the provided screws.
  5. Align the smoke detector with the mounting bracket and twist clockwise until it locks securely into place.

5.3 Activation

Before commissioning the smoke alarm, it is important to activate it and test it for correct operation.

Press the test button and hold it for approximately 3 seconds until the LED indicator lights up and then release the test button immediately. The smoke alarm will generate a beep to indicate that it is activated.

6. Operation

6.1 Normal Operation

During normal operation, the LED indicator will flash briefly every 40-60 seconds to confirm the unit is functioning correctly.

6.2 Testing the Alarm

It is recommended to test the smoke detector weekly. Press and hold the 'TEST/SILENCE' button for a few seconds. The alarm will sound, and the LED will flash. Release the button to stop the test.

6.3 Silencing the Alarm

In case of a non-emergency alarm (e.g., from cooking fumes), press the 'TEST/SILENCE' button to temporarily silence the alarm for approximately 10 minutes. The detector will automatically reset after this period.

6.4 Alarm Sound Gradient

When the test button is pressed to activate the test alarm or when smoke triggers the alarm, the first six sounds are low decibels. The sound starts low and gradually increases in volume from the seventh sound onwards. This progressive increase in volume is a design feature to prevent startling occupants.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Cleaning

Clean your smoke detector at least once a month. Use a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to remove dust and debris from the vents. Do not use water or cleaning solvents.

7.2 Battery Replacement

The smoke detector is equipped with a sealed 10-year lithium battery that is not user-replaceable. When the battery is low, the unit will emit a low battery warning (a chirp every 40-60 seconds). At this point, the entire unit should be replaced.

7.3 End of Life Indication

After approximately 10 years of operation, the smoke detector will indicate its end of life with a specific pattern of chirps or flashes. At this point, the entire unit must be replaced.
