1. Introduction and Overview

The Matek SERVO PDB (Power Distribution Board) with BEC (Battery Eliminator Circuit) is designed to provide a stable and adjustable power supply for servos in RC fixed-wing airplanes and FPV setups. It addresses the need for dedicated BECs for servos, especially when flight controllers lack sufficient power output for multiple high-current servos. This module helps reduce circuit loss and voltage drop on servo power wires, which is crucial for large-scale RC aircraft.

It accepts a wide input voltage range and offers selectable output voltages for various servo requirements, ensuring reliable operation of your control surfaces.

2. Product Features

  • Wide Operating Input Range: Accepts 5.5V to 36V, suitable for up to 8S LiPo batteries.
  • Adjustable Servo Voltage Output (Vx): Selectable outputs of 5V, 6V, 7.2V, or 8.2V. Default setting is 5V.
  • High Current Capability: Provides 4A continuous load current and up to 7A burst current.
  • 100% Duty Cycle: When input voltage is less than the set output voltage, the regulator output voltage equals the input voltage.
  • Short-Circuit Tolerant Output: Output is tolerant to short circuits for up to 3 seconds.
  • Compact Design: Small size (26 x 21 x 5mm) and lightweight (4g).
  • Standard Pin Spacing: Pins distance of 2.54mm for easy integration.

5. Setup and Installation

Careful installation is crucial for the proper functioning and longevity of your SVPDB-8S module. Please follow these steps:

5.1 Component Identification

Familiarize yourself with the layout of the SVPDB-8S module. The image below highlights key connection points and components.

5.2 Output Voltage Selection (Vx)

The SVPDB-8S allows you to select the output voltage for your servos using solder jumpers. The default output voltage is 5V. To change the output voltage, you will need to bridge specific solder pads as shown in the diagram below. Ensure no solder bridges are made between incorrect pads, as this could damage the module or connected servos.

  • 5V: Default setting, no jumpers needed.
  • 6V: Bridge the '6V' pads.
  • 7.2V: Bridge the '7.2V' pads.
  • 8.2V: Bridge the '8.2V' pads.

5.3 Wiring Diagram

Connect the SVPDB-8S to your power source (e.g., battery or ESC BEC output) and your servos according to the following guidelines. The VBAT input accepts the main battery voltage (5.5V to 36V). The Vx output pins provide the regulated voltage to your servos.

Figure 5.4: Example wiring diagram for the SVPDB-8S. VBAT input connects to the main battery or ESC. The regulated Vx output powers the servos, while signal lines from the flight controller connect directly to the servos.

Important Note:

  • The SVPDB-8S has NO protection for reversed input polarity. Ensure correct positive and negative connections to avoid damage.
  • Always double-check your wiring before applying power.

6. Operating Instructions

Once installed and wired correctly, the SVPDB-8S operates automatically to provide stable power to your servos at the selected voltage.

  • Power On: Apply input voltage within the 5.5V to 36V range to the VBAT and G (Ground) pads.
  • Voltage Regulation: The module will regulate the input voltage down to the pre-selected Vx (5V, 6V, 7.2V, or 8.2V) for the servo outputs.
  • Current Output: The module can supply a continuous current of 4A, with burst capabilities up to 7A, sufficient for multiple standard and high-torque servos.
  • Duty Cycle Behavior: If the input voltage drops below your selected Vx output voltage (e.g., you selected 8.2V, but your battery is at 7.0V), the output voltage will follow the input voltage (i.e., output will be 7.0V). This ensures continuous power delivery even under low input voltage conditions, though not at the regulated level.

7. Maintenance

The Matek SVPDB-8S is a robust electronic component designed for reliability. Minimal maintenance is required, but adhering to these guidelines will help ensure its long-term performance:

  • Keep Clean: Periodically inspect the module for dust, dirt, or debris. Gently clean with a soft, dry brush or compressed air if necessary. Avoid using liquids.
  • Inspect Connections: Regularly check all solder joints and wire connections for looseness, corrosion, or damage. Re-solder or replace wires as needed.
  • Environmental Protection: While designed for RC applications, protect the module from excessive moisture, extreme temperatures, and direct physical impact. Consider conformal coating for enhanced moisture resistance in humid environments.
  • Avoid Overloading: Do not exceed the specified continuous (4A) or burst (7A) current ratings to prevent overheating and potential damage.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your SVPDB-8S, refer to the following troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power Output to Servos:
    • Verify input voltage: Ensure the main battery or ESC BEC is providing power within the 5.5V-36V range to the SVPDB-8S VBAT input.
    • Check input polarity: Confirm that positive and negative input wires are connected correctly. The module has no reverse polarity protection.
    • Inspect all wiring: Look for loose connections, broken wires, or cold solder joints between the power source, SVPDB-8S, and servos.
    • Check for short circuits: Ensure no accidental short circuits are present on the output side (servo connections). The module is short-circuit tolerant for 3 seconds, but prolonged shorts can cause damage.
  • Incorrect Output Voltage:
    • Verify jumper settings: Double-check the solder jumper configuration for the desired Vx output voltage (5V, 6V, 7.2V, 8.2V) as per Section 5.2. Ensure only one set of pads is bridged.
    • Measure input voltage: If the input voltage is below your selected Vx, the output voltage will match the input voltage (due to 100% duty cycle behavior). Ensure your input voltage is higher than your desired output.
  • Servos Behaving Erratically or Not Responding:
    • Check servo connections: Ensure servo power (red wire) and ground (brown/black wire) are correctly connected to the SVPDB-8S, and the signal wire (orange/yellow/white) is connected to the flight controller.
    • Verify servo compatibility: Ensure your servos are rated for the voltage you have selected on the SVPDB-8S.
    • Overcurrent: If too many high-current servos are connected, the module might be overloaded. Reduce the number of servos or use an additional power source if necessary.

If problems persist after following these steps, please contact the seller or manufacturer for further assistance.
