2. Safety Information

Please read and understand all safety instructions before installing or operating your Nest Thermostat. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, or other hazards.

  • Electrical Safety: Always turn off power to your heating and cooling system at the circuit breaker before beginning any installation or wiring.
  • Professional Installation: If you are unsure about any part of the installation process, consult a qualified HVAC professional.
  • Indoor Use Only: This device is designed for indoor use in residential or light commercial environments.
  • Battery Handling: The thermostat uses AA batteries. Ensure correct polarity when inserting batteries. Do not mix old and new batteries or different types of batteries.

3. Package Contents

Verify that your package contains the following items:

  • Nest Learning Thermostat Display
  • Nest Base
  • Mounting Screws and Wall Anchors
  • Trim Plate (optional, to cover marks from old thermostat)
  • Quick Start Guide

4. Setup

4.1 Installation

  1. Turn off Power: Locate your circuit breaker and turn off the power to your heating and cooling system.
  2. Remove Old Thermostat: Carefully remove your old thermostat from the wall. Take a picture of the wiring before disconnecting any wires.
  3. Install Nest Base: Mount the Nest Base to the wall using the provided screws and anchors. Ensure the base is level.
  4. Wire the Nest Thermostat: Connect your system's wires to the corresponding terminals on the Nest Base. The Nest Thermostat is compatible with most 24V heating and cooling systems. A C-wire (common wire) is often recommended for consistent power, especially with systems that do not provide continuous power to the thermostat. If you do not have a C-wire, the Nest Thermostat may still work by 'power stealing' from other wires, but this can lead to intermittent issues.
  5. Attach Display: Snap the Nest Thermostat display onto the Nest Base.
  6. Restore Power: Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker.

4.2 App Configuration

  1. Download the Nest App: Download the Google Nest app from your device's app store.
  2. Create an Account: Open the app and create a new account or sign in with an existing Google account.
  3. Add Device: Follow the in-app instructions to add your Nest Thermostat. You will typically scan a QR code on the thermostat or enter a 6-digit entry key.
  4. Connect to Wi-Fi: The app will guide you through connecting your thermostat to your home Wi-Fi network. This enables remote control and smart features.
  5. Initial Setup: Complete the initial setup questions regarding your home type, heating/cooling system, and preferences.

Note for Refurbished Units: If you are setting up a refurbished unit and encounter issues connecting to the app, you may need to perform a factory reset and then use the website home.nest.com to add the device. After resetting the Wi-Fi connection on the thermostat, it may provide a 7-digit entry key (e.g., 123-ABCD) which can be entered on the website to link the thermostat to your account.

5. Operating the Thermostat

The Nest Learning Thermostat can be controlled directly on the device, through the Nest app, or with voice commands via Google Assistant or Alexa.

5.1 Basic Controls

  • Turning the Ring: Rotate the outer ring of the thermostat to adjust the target temperature.
  • Pressing the Display: Press the display to access the main menu, confirm selections, or view detailed information.

5.2 Learning Function

The Nest Thermostat learns your preferred temperatures over time. Adjust the temperature manually for a few days, and the thermostat will begin to build a schedule based on your habits. Look for the Nest Leaf icon on the display, which indicates an energy-saving temperature setting.

5.3 Scheduling

While the thermostat learns automatically, you can also create or modify a custom schedule through the Nest app or directly on the device. This allows for precise control over your home's temperature throughout the day and week.

5.4 Remote Control and Voice Commands

Use the Google Nest app on your smartphone or tablet to control your thermostat from anywhere. You can also integrate your Nest Thermostat with voice assistants like Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa for hands-free control. For example, say "Hey Google, set the thermostat to 72 degrees" or "Alexa, turn up the heat."

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning

To clean your Nest Thermostat, gently wipe the display and outer ring with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, solvents, or spray cleaners directly on the device.

6.2 Battery Replacement

The Nest Thermostat uses two AA batteries for backup power. When the battery level is low, you will receive a notification on the thermostat display and in the Nest app. To replace the batteries:

  1. Gently pull the display off the Nest Base.
  2. Remove the old AA batteries.
  3. Insert two new AA alkaline batteries, ensuring correct polarity.
  4. Snap the display back onto the Nest Base.

6.3 Software Updates

Your Nest Thermostat automatically downloads and installs software updates when connected to Wi-Fi. Ensure your thermostat remains connected to the internet to receive the latest features and security enhancements.

7. Troubleshooting

  • No Power/Display Off: Check your circuit breaker. Ensure the thermostat display is properly seated on the base. If your system lacks a C-wire, ensure the AA batteries are fresh.
  • Wi-Fi Connectivity Issues: Verify your home Wi-Fi network is operational. Restart your router and the Nest Thermostat. Ensure the thermostat is within range of your Wi-Fi signal.
  • Heating/Cooling Not Working: Check the thermostat's mode (Heat, Cool, Off). Ensure the target temperature is set appropriately. Verify your HVAC system is receiving power.
  • Thermostat Not Learning: Ensure you are making manual temperature adjustments consistently for a few days. Check that the 'Learning' feature is enabled in the settings.
  • Factory Reset: If persistent issues occur, you can perform a factory reset. Go to Settings > Reset > All Settings on the thermostat. Be aware that this will erase all your settings and learned schedules, requiring re-setup.
