3.2 Connecting Test Leads
The multimeter comes with a set of test leads (red and black). Proper connection is crucial for accurate and safe measurements.
- Always connect the black test lead to the 'COM' (Common) input jack.
- For voltage, resistance, continuity, diode, and frequency measurements, connect the red test lead to the 'VΩHz' input jack.
- For current measurements (mA/µA), connect the red test lead to the 'mAµA' input jack.
- For high current measurements (A), connect the red test lead to the '10A' input jack.

4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Powering On/Off
To turn the multimeter on, rotate the central function dial from the 'OFF' position to any desired measurement function. To turn it off, rotate the dial back to the 'OFF' position.
4.2 Function Selection
The rotary dial allows you to select various measurement functions:
- V~: AC Voltage measurement
- V-: DC Voltage measurement
- mV~: AC Millivolt measurement
- mV-: DC Millivolt measurement
- Ω: Resistance measurement
- Continuity/Diode: For checking circuit continuity and diode functionality.
- Hz%: Frequency and Duty Cycle measurement
- µA~/µA-: AC/DC Microampere current measurement
- mA~/mA-: AC/DC Milliampere current measurement
- A~/A-: AC/DC Ampere current measurement
4.3 Basic Measurements
After selecting the desired function and connecting the test leads appropriately, touch the test probes to the circuit or component you wish to measure. The reading will appear on the digital display.
- Voltage Measurement: Connect leads in parallel with the circuit.
- Current Measurement: Connect leads in series with the circuit. Ensure the circuit is de-energized before connecting for current measurement.
- Resistance Measurement: Ensure the component is de-energized before measuring resistance.
4.4 Special Functions
- HOLD: Press the 'HOLD' button to freeze the current reading on the display. Press again to release.
- MIN/MAX: Press the 'MIN/MAX' button to record the minimum and maximum values during a measurement session. Press again to cycle through MIN, MAX, and current readings.
- RANGE: While the multimeter typically uses auto-ranging, this button allows manual range selection in some modes.
- Backlight/Flashlight: The multimeter includes a built-in flashlight and display backlight for improved visibility in low-light conditions. Refer to the device buttons for activation.
5. Maintenance
5.1 Cleaning
To clean the multimeter, wipe the case with a damp cloth and a mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Ensure the device is completely dry before use.
5.2 Battery Replacement
Refer to Section 3.1 for detailed instructions on battery replacement. Always use fresh batteries of the specified type.
5.3 Fuse Replacement
The VOLTCRAFT VC831 is equipped with 1000V high current fuses to protect the device during current measurements. If the multimeter fails to measure current, the fuse may be blown. Fuse replacement should only be performed by qualified personnel.
- Ensure the multimeter is turned off and all test leads are disconnected.
- Open the battery compartment cover as described in Section 3.1.
- Carefully remove the old fuse(s).
- Replace with new fuses of the exact same type and rating. Incorrect fuses can lead to damage or safety hazards.
- Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it.
5.4 Storage
When not in use for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage. Store the multimeter in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
6. Troubleshooting
- No Display/Faint Display: Check battery charge. Replace batteries if necessary.
- Incorrect Readings: Ensure test leads are correctly connected for the selected function. Verify the measurement range if not in auto-ranging mode. Check for damaged test leads.
- No Current Measurement: The fuse for the current input may be blown. Refer to Section 5.3 for fuse replacement.
- Multimeter Does Not Turn On: Ensure the rotary dial is not in the 'OFF' position. Check battery installation and charge.
