3. Setup

3.1 Initial Winding

As an automatic watch, the Seiko SSK005 is powered by the motion of your wrist. If the watch has stopped, gently swing it from side to side for about 30 seconds to initiate movement. For a full power reserve, it is recommended to wear the watch regularly or manually wind it by rotating the crown clockwise in position 0 (fully pushed in) for approximately 60 turns.

3.2 Setting Time and Date

  1. Pull the Crown: Gently pull the crown out to position 2 (first click) for date adjustment, or position 3 (second click) for time adjustment.
  2. Set Date: In position 2, rotate the crown to set the date. Avoid setting the date between 9 PM and 4 AM to prevent damage to the movement.
  3. Set Time: In position 3, rotate the crown to set the hour and minute hands. The second hand will stop, allowing for precise time setting.
  4. Set GMT Hand: The GMT hand (fourth hand) is linked to the main hour hand. To set it, first set the main time, then use the bi-directional bezel to track the second time zone.
  5. Push Crown Back: Once set, push the crown back to position 0 to secure the settings and ensure water resistance.

3.3 Bracelet Adjustment

The stainless steel bracelet can be adjusted by adding or removing links to achieve a comfortable fit. It is recommended to have this procedure performed by a qualified watch technician to prevent damage to the bracelet or watch.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Reading the GMT Function

The Seiko SSK005 features a 24-hour GMT hand and a bi-directional bezel. To use it:

  • Set the main hour hand to your local time.
  • Rotate the bi-directional bezel to align the desired second time zone with the GMT hand. For example, if the GMT hand points to '18' on the bezel, it indicates 6 PM in that second time zone.

4.2 Water Resistance

This watch is water-resistant up to 100 meters (10 BAR). This rating means it is suitable for everyday use and can withstand splashes, rain, and brief immersion in water, such as swimming or snorkeling. It is not designed for scuba diving or high-impact water sports. Always ensure the crown is fully pushed in before any water exposure.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

To maintain the appearance of your watch, wipe the case and bracelet regularly with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed by immediate drying. Avoid using chemical cleaners or abrasive materials.

5.2 Water Resistance Checks

To ensure continued water resistance, it is recommended to have your watch inspected by a Seiko authorized service center every 2-3 years, or after any significant impact. Gaskets and seals can degrade over time, affecting water resistance.

5.3 Power Reserve

The 4R34 caliber has a power reserve of approximately 41 hours. If the watch is not worn for an extended period, it will stop. Simply wind it manually or wear it to restart the movement.

6. Troubleshooting

6.1 Watch Not Running

  • Insufficient Winding: If the watch has stopped, it may not have enough power reserve. Manually wind the watch by rotating the crown clockwise in position 0 for 60 turns, or wear it for several hours.
  • Crown Position: Ensure the crown is fully pushed in. If it's pulled out, the watch will not run.

6.2 Date Not Changing

  • Incorrect Time: The date changes automatically around midnight. If the watch is set to AM/PM incorrectly, the date may change at noon instead of midnight. Adjust the time by 12 hours if necessary.
  • Setting During Prohibited Hours: Avoid adjusting the date between 9 PM and 4 AM, as this can interfere with the date change mechanism.

6.3 Condensation Inside Crystal

If you notice condensation inside the watch crystal, it indicates a breach in water resistance. Immediately take the watch to a Seiko authorized service center for inspection and repair to prevent further damage to the movement.
