5. Setup and Initial Configuration

5.1 Charging the Device

Before first use, ensure the T-Echo is fully charged. Connect the provided USB cable to the device's USB port and to a standard USB power source (e.g., computer USB port, wall adapter). The device will indicate charging status.

5.2 Firmware Installation (Meshtastic)

The LILYGO T-Echo is designed to work with Meshtastic firmware. Follow these steps to install or update the firmware:

  1. Visit the official Meshtastic website (meshtastic.org) and navigate to the "Downloads" section.
  2. Locate and download the latest firmware for the LILYGO T-Echo (NRF52840) in UF2 format.
  3. Unzip the downloaded firmware file.
  4. Connect the LILYGO T-Echo to your computer using the USB cable.
  5. Double-click the device's disk drive (usually named "TECHBOOT" or similar) that appears on your computer. This will eject the disk.
  6. Copy the downloaded UF2 firmware file (e.g., "firmware-t-echo-xxxx.uf2") directly into the root directory of the T-Echo's disk drive.
  7. The device will automatically refresh and install the new firmware. This process may take a few moments.

To interact with your T-Echo and the Meshtastic network, install the Meshtastic application on your smartphone:

6.1 Device Controls

The T-Echo features two buttons for basic control:

6.2 Connecting to the Meshtastic App

After installing the Meshtastic App on your phone:

  1. Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your smartphone.
  2. Open the Meshtastic App. It will automatically search for nearby Meshtastic devices.
  3. Select your LILYGO T-Echo from the list of discovered devices to establish a connection.
  4. Once connected, you can configure settings such as frequency band and user name within the app.
  5. Navigate to the "Message" interface to send and receive messages.

6.3 Sending Messages

To send messages through the Meshtastic network using the app:

  1. In the Meshtastic App, select the desired channel (e.g., "All" for broadcasting to all users on the network).
  2. Type your message in the text input field.
  3. Press the send button. Your message will be transmitted via the LoRa network.

ProblemPossible Cause / Solution
Device not turning on.Battery may be depleted. Connect to a USB power source and charge for at least 30 minutes. Ensure the USB cable is functioning correctly.
Cannot connect to Meshtastic App.
  • Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone.
  • Verify the T-Echo is powered on and within Bluetooth range.
  • Restart both the T-Echo and the Meshtastic App.
  • Check if the T-Echo has the latest Meshtastic firmware installed. Incompatible firmware versions can prevent connection.
Messages not sending/receiving.
  • Ensure the device is connected to the Meshtastic App.
  • Verify that other devices are on the same frequency band and channel.
  • Check for obstructions or excessive distance between devices. LoRa range can be affected by terrain and obstacles.
  • Confirm the antenna is securely attached.
E-paper display is blank or frozen.Try resetting the device by pressing Button 1 once. If the issue persists, re-flash the firmware.
