3. Setup and Assembly
Before operating your chainsaw, proper assembly and fueling are crucial.
3.1 Bar and Chain Assembly
- Ensure the chain brake is disengaged.
- Remove the chain cover nuts and the chain cover.
- Carefully place the chain around the clutch drum, ensuring the cutting edges face the direction of rotation.
- Fit the guide bar over the bar studs and align the chain with the groove in the guide bar.
- Replace the chain cover and tighten the nuts finger-tight.
- Adjust chain tension (refer to Section 4.2 for details).
3.2 Fueling and Chain Oil
The TB4620C uses a 2-cycle engine and requires a specific fuel mixture.
- Fuel Mixture: Mix unleaded gasoline with 2-cycle engine oil at the ratio specified in the engine oil's instructions (typically 50:1 or 40:1). Use fresh, clean fuel.
- Fuel Tank: Fill the fuel tank carefully, avoiding spills. Ensure the fuel cap is securely tightened.
- Chain Oil: Fill the chain oil reservoir with high-quality bar and chain oil. The automatic oiler will lubricate the chain during operation. Check oil level frequently.

4. Operating Instructions
Follow these steps for safe and effective operation of your chainsaw.
4.1 Starting the Chainsaw (SpringAssist®)
- Place the chainsaw on a firm, flat surface.
- Engage the chain brake by pushing the hand guard forward.
- Set the choke to the FULL CHOKE position.
- Press the primer bulb 6-10 times until fuel is visible.
- Pull the starter rope firmly and smoothly until the engine fires (usually 1-3 pulls). Do not pull the rope to its full extension.
- Once the engine fires, move the choke to the HALF CHOKE position.
- Pull the starter rope again until the engine starts and runs.
- Once running, disengage the chain brake by pulling the hand guard back.
- Allow the engine to warm up for a few moments before beginning cutting.
4.2 Chain Tension Adjustment
Proper chain tension is vital for safe operation and optimal cutting performance. The chain should be snug against the guide bar, but still able to be pulled around the bar by hand. There should be no sag on the underside of the bar.
- Loosen the chain cover nuts slightly.
- Use the tensioning screw (usually located on the side of the chainsaw) to adjust the chain tension.
- Once tension is correct, re-tighten the chain cover nuts securely.
4.3 Cutting Techniques and Safety
- Always maintain a firm grip with both hands on the chainsaw handles.
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart for balance.
- Be aware of kickback, which can occur if the tip of the guide bar contacts an object.
- Plan your cuts and clear the work area of obstacles.
- Never cut above shoulder height.
- Always engage the chain brake when moving between cuts or if the chainsaw is not actively cutting.
5. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your Troy-Bilt TB4620C chainsaw.
5.1 Daily Maintenance
- Check chain tension and adjust if necessary.
- Inspect the chain for sharpness and damage. Sharpen or replace as needed.
- Check chain oil and fuel levels.
- Clean debris from the air filter, cooling fins, and chain brake mechanism.
5.2 Periodic Maintenance
- Air Filter: Clean or replace the air filter regularly, especially in dusty conditions.
- Spark Plug: Inspect and clean the spark plug. Replace if worn or fouled.
- Guide Bar: Clean the guide bar groove and oil holes. Flip the guide bar periodically to ensure even wear.
- Chain Sharpening: A dull chain can cause kickback and poor cutting performance. Sharpen the chain regularly using appropriate tools or have it professionally sharpened.
6. Troubleshooting
This section provides solutions to common issues you might encounter.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Chainsaw won't start | No fuel, incorrect choke setting, fouled spark plug, clogged fuel filter | Check fuel level and mixture, adjust choke, clean/replace spark plug, replace fuel filter |
| Engine runs, but chain does not move | Chain brake engaged, incorrect chain tension, clutch issue | Disengage chain brake, adjust chain tension, consult service center for clutch issues |
| Poor cutting performance | Dull chain, incorrect chain tension, insufficient chain oil | Sharpen/replace chain, adjust chain tension, fill chain oil reservoir |
| Excessive vibration | Loose components, damaged chain/bar, worn anti-vibration mounts | Check all fasteners, inspect chain/bar for damage, consult service center for mounts |
