MXR Duke of Tone Overdrive Pedal Instruction Manual

Model: CSP039

Introduction

The MXR Duke of Tone Overdrive is a guitar effects pedal designed in collaboration with Analog Man. It is engineered to enhance your guitar's tone by adding warmth and grit while preserving the natural character of your high-end equipment. This pedal offers versatile gain options, allowing for clean boosts, mild overdrive, and richer distortion, making it suitable for various musical applications and stacking with other gain pedals.

Setup

Power Requirements

The Duke of Tone pedal operates on 9V or 18V DC power. For increased headroom and clarity, especially in Boost mode, 18V operation is recommended. Ensure your power supply meets these specifications to prevent damage to the unit.

Connections

  1. Connect your guitar to the IN jack on the side of the pedal using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.
  2. Connect the OUT jack on the opposite side of the pedal to your amplifier's input or the next pedal in your signal chain using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.
  3. Connect a compatible 9V or 18V DC power supply (not included) to the power input jack.

Controls

  • VOLUME: Adjusts the overall output level of the effect.
  • DRIVE: Controls the amount of gain and overdrive. Higher settings increase saturation.
  • TONE: Shapes the tonal character, from darker to brighter sounds.

Boost/OD/Distortion Switch

This three-way toggle switch allows you to select between different clipping characteristics:

  • BOOST: Provides a clean, vigorous signal boost without significant distortion, ideal for pushing your amplifier or other pedals.
  • OD (Overdrive): Adds a touch of grit and compression, offering a classic overdrive sound.
  • DIST (Distortion): Delivers a more saturated and thicker distortion, suitable for higher-gain tones.

Internal Treble Trim Pot

For advanced tonal shaping, the pedal includes an internal treble trim pot. This allows users to fine-tune the high-end response, which can be particularly useful for darker amplifiers or to add extra sparkle to your sound. Accessing this trim pot requires opening the pedal enclosure.

True Bypass

The Duke of Tone features true bypass switching, ensuring that your guitar's signal remains unaffected when the pedal is disengaged.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your MXR Duke of Tone pedal, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Keep the pedal clean by wiping it with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Store the pedal in a dry environment, away from extreme temperatures and humidity.
  • Disconnect the power supply when the pedal is not in use for extended periods.
  • Regularly check all cable connections for secure fit and signs of wear.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your MXR Duke of Tone pedal, consider the following:

  • No Sound: Ensure all cables are securely connected. Verify the power supply is correctly plugged in and providing the correct voltage (9V or 18V DC). Test with different cables and a different power supply if available.
  • Unwanted Noise/Hum: Check for proper grounding in your setup. Ensure your power supply is regulated and free from noise. Try isolating the pedal from other electronics.
  • Effect Not Engaging: Confirm the footswitch is functioning correctly. If the LED does not light up when pressed, check power and connections.
