4. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for accurate readings and device longevity. Follow these steps carefully:

4.1 Engine Signal Connection (RPM)

  1. Locate the spark plug wire on your engine.
  2. Wrap the inductive wire from the meter around the spark plug wire 5-7 times. Ensure a snug fit.
  3. Secure the inductive wire with cable ties to prevent it from coming loose.

4.2 Temperature Sensor Installation

  1. Identify a suitable location on your engine for temperature measurement, typically near the cylinder head or a coolant line.
  2. Mount the PT100 temperature sensor securely at this location. Ensure good contact for accurate readings.
  3. Connect the temperature sensor wire to the designated port on the Runleader meter.
  4. Important: Do not bend the temperature induction probe, as this can cause internal damage and inaccurate readings.

4.3 Product Mounting

The meter offers multiple mounting options:

  • Bracket Mounting: Use the provided universal mounting bracket (RL-HMB005). Attach the bracket to a suitable surface using the bolts and nuts, then slide the meter into the bracket.
  • Screw-on Mounting: The meter housing has screw holes. Secure the meter directly to a flat surface using appropriate screws (not included, but bolts/nuts for bracket can be adapted if suitable).
  • Stick-on Mounting: Use the included 3M adhesive velcro for quick and easy attachment to a clean, flat surface.

5. Operating Instructions

The Runleader RL-HM035A-M5 features two buttons: 'M' (Mode) and 'S' (Set).

5.1 Button Functions

  • 'M' Button: Short press to cycle through display modes (TOT, JOB, RPM, TEMP, SVC). Long press to enter or exit setting menus.
  • 'S' Button: Short press to adjust values or confirm selections within setting menus. Long press to reset certain values or activate specific functions.

5.2 Initial Setup and Settings

  1. Engine Ignition Pattern: Before first use, set the correct ignition pattern for accurate RPM readings. Long press 'M' until the setting menu appears. Navigate to the engine type setting (e.g., 2P1R, 1P1R, etc.) and use 'S' to select the appropriate pattern for your engine (e.g., 2-stroke, 4-stroke with 1 or 2 sparks per revolution, etc.). Confirm with 'M'.
  2. Setting Initial Hours (INT): If replacing an existing hour meter, you can program the previous total hours. Enter the setting menu, navigate to INT, and use 'S' to adjust the value. Confirm with 'M'.
  3. Setting Service Interval (SVC): To set a maintenance reminder, enter the setting menu, navigate to SVC, and use 'S' to set the desired interval (e.g., 50 hours). The meter will alert you when this interval is reached. Confirm with 'M'.
  4. Setting RPM Alert: Enter the setting menu, navigate to the RPM alert option (ALE RPM), and use 'S' to set your desired maximum RPM threshold. If the engine exceeds this RPM, the backlight will turn red and an alert icon will display. Confirm with 'M'.
  5. Setting Temperature Alert: Enter the setting menu, navigate to the temperature alert option (ALE TEMP), and use 'S' to set your desired maximum temperature threshold. If the engine temperature exceeds this, the backlight will turn red and an alert icon will display. Confirm with 'M'.
  6. Switching Temperature Units: In the temperature display mode, a long press of the 'S' button may toggle between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F). Refer to the specific on-screen prompts.
  7. Backlight Modes: In the setting menu, locate the backlight option. Use 'S' to cycle through modes: Always On, OFF, and Auto. In Auto mode, the backlight activates with button presses and turns off after a period of inactivity. Confirm with 'M'.

5.3 Viewing Data

Short press the 'M' button to cycle through the following display screens:

  • TOT (Total Hours): Displays the cumulative engine running time. This value cannot be reset.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Battery Replacement

The RL-HM035A-M5 is powered by a replaceable CR2032 lithium-metal battery. When the battery indicator shows low power, replace it as follows:

  1. Carefully open the battery compartment cover on the back of the meter using the mini screwdriver.
  2. Remove the old CR2032 battery.
  3. Insert a new CR2032 battery with the positive (+) side facing up.
  4. Ensure the insulating sheet and O-ring are correctly positioned to maintain water resistance.
  5. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

6.2 Cleaning

Wipe the meter with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the display or housing.

6.3 Sensor Care

Regularly inspect the inductive wire and temperature sensor for any signs of wear or damage. Ensure the temperature induction probe is not bent, as this can compromise its accuracy and functionality.
