4. Installation

This section provides step-by-step instructions for installing your Square D X Series Dimmer. Refer to the embedded video for a visual guide.

Video: How to Install Square D Dimmer. This video demonstrates the installation process for the Square D dimmer, including wiring for single-pole and 3-way circuits, and testing the device.

4.1. Pre-Installation Steps

  1. Turn Off Power: Locate your circuit breaker panel and turn off the power to the switch you are replacing or the circuit where you are installing the new dimmer.
  2. Verify Power is Off: Use a properly rated voltage sensing device to confirm that the power is completely off at the switch box.
  3. Identify Wires: Carefully pull the existing switch out of the wall box. Identify the wires: ground (bare copper or green), hot (black, usually connected to the line side), load (black, usually connected to the light fixture), and neutral (white, if present). The Square D dimmer wires are labeled on the back of the device.

4.2. Wiring the Dimmer

Use the included wire nuts. For stranded device wires and solid house wires, securely wrap the stranded wires around the solid wires with lineman's pliers before tightening the wire nuts.

  1. Connect Ground Wire: Connect the house green or bare copper ground wire to the green ground wire on the dimmer.
  2. Connect Hot Wire: Connect the black house hot wire to the black hot wire on the dimmer.
  3. Connect Load Wire: Connect the remaining black house load wire to the load wire on the dimmer.
  4. Connect Neutral Wire (if applicable): If your installation requires a neutral connection, connect the house neutral wire to the neutral wire on the dimmer.

4.3. 3-Way Circuit Wiring (if applicable)

If you are wiring the dimmer in a 3-way circuit, you will need to add a single-pole switch on the far end. Follow the wiring identification as shown in the diagram below. The dimmer will connect to the traveler and neutral wires from the single-pole switch.

4.4. Final Steps

  1. Insert Dimmer: Carefully insert the wired dimmer into the wall box, ensuring no wires are pinched against the device or the box.
  2. Secure Dimmer: Use the provided screws to secure the dimmer to the wall box.
  3. Restore Power & Test: Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker. Test the dimmer to ensure it functions correctly.
  4. Install Wall Plate: Install the appropriate Square D X Series wall plate (not provided) over the dimmer. It should snap into place for a flush finish.

5. Operation

The Square D X Series Rocker Dimmer offers intuitive control over your lighting.

  • Turn On/Off: Press the top of the rocker to turn the lights on to the last set brightness. Press the bottom of the rocker to turn the lights off.
  • Adjust Brightness: To dim or brighten the lights, press and hold the top of the rocker for increasing brightness, or press and hold the bottom of the rocker for decreasing brightness.
  • Air Gap Switch: The small slider on the side or bottom of the dimmer acts as an air gap switch, completely disconnecting power to the light fixture for bulb replacement or maintenance.

6. Adjusting Dimming Range

To optimize performance and prevent flickering with certain LED or CFL bulbs, you may need to adjust the dimmer's low-end trim setting.

  1. Set to Full Brightness: Slide the dimmer all the way to the top for full brightness.
  2. Dim Gradually: Slowly slide the dimmer down until the light starts to flicker or just before the bulb turns off.
  3. Adjust Setting Wheel: If flickering occurs, locate the small setting wheel (trim adjustment) on the side of the dimmer. Adjust this wheel slightly up or down until the flickering stops and the light dims smoothly to your desired minimum level.

7. Maintenance

The Square D X Series Dimmer is designed for long-lasting, maintenance-free operation.

  • Cleaning: To clean the dimmer and wall plate, wipe with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • No User-Serviceable Parts: There are no user-serviceable parts inside the dimmer. Do not attempt to open or repair the device.

8. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Lights do not turn on.No power to the dimmer; incorrect wiring; bulb burned out.Check circuit breaker; verify wiring connections; replace bulb.
Lights flicker at low dimming levels.Low-end trim setting is too low for the bulb type.Adjust the setting wheel (trim adjustment) on the dimmer until flickering stops (refer to Section 6).
Dimmer gets warm.Normal operation for dimmers, especially under heavy load. This is generally normal. Ensure the dimmer is not exceeding its rated wattage. If it feels excessively hot, reduce the load or consult an electrician.
Lights do not dim.Non-dimmable bulbs are installed; incorrect wiring.Ensure dimmable bulbs are used; verify wiring connections.
