  • 400 Amp ANL Ceramic Fuse
  • Red Fuse Holder
  • Terminal Covers

2.2 Materials

The fuse holder is constructed for durability and performance:

  • Base Material: Durable, heavy-duty, nylon-based, glass-filled plastic. This material is designed to withstand high temperatures without melting.
  • Holder Materials: Stainless steel connection posts, lock washers, and flat washers ensure secure and corrosion-resistant connections. A ceramic conductive spacer provides insulation and heat resistance.

3. Safety Information

WARNING: Electrical systems can be dangerous. Improper installation or use can result in serious injury, property damage, or death. If you are not confident in your ability to install this product safely, seek assistance from a qualified professional.

  • Always disconnect power from the circuit before installing or servicing the fuse holder.
  • Ensure the fuse amperage rating matches the requirements of your circuit and connected devices. Using an incorrect fuse rating can lead to inadequate protection or premature fuse failure.
  • Verify all connections are tight and secure to prevent arcing and overheating.
  • Install the fuse holder in a dry, protected location, away from flammable materials.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety glasses and insulated gloves, during installation.

4. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps for proper installation of the ANL fuse and holder kit:

  1. Prepare the Installation Area: Choose a suitable mounting location that is clean, dry, and provides adequate ventilation. Ensure there is enough space for wiring and access for maintenance.
  2. Disconnect Power: Before beginning any electrical work, ensure all power sources to the circuit are disconnected and secured to prevent accidental re-energization.
  3. Mount the Fuse Holder: Securely mount the fuse holder to a stable surface using appropriate fasteners (not included) through the designated mounting holes on the base.
  4. Connect Wiring:
    • Connect the positive input cable to one terminal of the fuse holder.
    • Connect the positive output cable to the other terminal of the fuse holder.
    • Ensure that the cable lugs are properly crimped and sized for the terminals.
    • Tighten the terminal nuts securely. For applications subject to vibration, consider applying a removable thread locker (e.g., blue Loctite) to the terminal nuts to prevent loosening over time.
  5. Install the ANL Fuse: Place the 400 Amp ANL ceramic fuse between the two terminal posts, ensuring it sits flat and makes good contact with both terminals. Secure it by tightening the terminal nuts.
  6. Attach Terminal Covers: Place the protective terminal covers over the fuse holder to prevent accidental contact with live terminals. The Gen 2 design ensures the cover remains secure even when mounted vertically.
  7. Verify Connections: Double-check all wiring connections for tightness and correct polarity.
  8. Restore Power: Once installation is complete and verified, carefully restore power to the circuit.

5. Operation

The Spartan Power ANL Fuse and Holder Kit operates passively to protect your electrical system. When the current flowing through the circuit exceeds the 400 Amp rating of the fuse for a sustained period, the ceramic fuse element will melt, creating an open circuit and interrupting the flow of electricity. This prevents damage to your wiring, batteries, and connected equipment from overcurrent conditions.

A blown fuse indicates an overcurrent event has occurred. It is essential to identify and resolve the cause of the overcurrent before replacing the fuse.

6. Maintenance

Regular inspection and maintenance will ensure the longevity and reliability of your fuse holder kit:

  • Periodic Inspection: Annually, or more frequently in harsh environments, inspect the fuse holder and connections for any signs of corrosion, discoloration, or loose connections.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the fuse holder clean and free from dirt, dust, and moisture.
  • Fuse Replacement: If the fuse blows, always replace it with a new ANL fuse of the exact same amperage rating (400 Amps). Never use a fuse with a higher rating, as this can compromise circuit protection. Follow the installation steps in Section 4 for fuse replacement.

7. Troubleshooting

If your electrical system is not functioning as expected, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No power to circuitBlown fuseDisconnect power, inspect fuse. If blown, identify and resolve the cause of overcurrent, then replace with a new 400 Amp ANL fuse.
Fuse holder overheatingLoose connections, undersized wiring, or sustained high current drawDisconnect power. Check all terminal connections for tightness. Ensure wiring is appropriately sized for the current. If overheating persists, consult a professional.
Protective cover falls offVibration or improper seating (older models)Ensure the cover is fully seated. For extreme vibration, additional securing methods (e.g., zip ties or Velcro straps) may be considered, ensuring they do not interfere with heat dissipation or access.
