4. Setup and Assembly

Follow these steps to safely attach the post hole digger to your skid steer and prepare it for operation.

4.1 Attaching to Skid Steer:

  1. Park the skid steer on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
  2. Ensure the skid steer's auxiliary hydraulic lines are depressurized.
  3. Align the digger's mounting frame with the skid steer's quick-attach plate.
  4. Slowly tilt the quick-attach plate forward and raise the loader arms to engage the top hooks of the frame.
  5. Lower the loader arms and tilt the quick-attach plate backward until the frame is fully seated against the plate.
  6. Engage the quick-attach locking pins to secure the attachment. Verify that both pins are fully engaged.
  7. Connect the hydraulic hoses from the digger to the skid steer's auxiliary hydraulic couplers. Ensure a secure, leak-free connection. The flat-faced couplers are designed for easy and clean connection.

4.2 Attaching Auger Bit:

  1. Ensure the hydraulic drive unit is securely attached to the skid steer and the engine is off.
  2. Select the desired auger bit size (6", 12", or 14").
  3. Align the auger bit's shaft with the output shaft of the hydraulic drive unit.
  4. Insert the auger bit into the drive unit's shaft. Secure it with the appropriate pin or bolt, ensuring it is fully seated and locked.
  5. Double-check all connections and ensure no tools are left on the attachment before starting the skid steer.

5. Operating Instructions

Proper operation ensures efficiency and extends the life of your post hole digger.

5.1 Pre-Operation Checklist:

5.2 Drilling Procedure:

  1. Start the skid steer engine and engage the auxiliary hydraulics.
  2. Position the auger bit directly over the desired drilling location.
  3. Slowly lower the auger bit until it makes contact with the ground.
  4. Gradually apply hydraulic pressure to begin rotation. Allow the auger to cut into the soil.
  5. Apply downward pressure with the skid steer's loader arms as the auger drills. Avoid excessive force, allowing the auger's cutting action to do the work.
  6. As the hole deepens, periodically lift the auger slightly to clear soil from the flutes. This prevents clogging and improves drilling efficiency.
  7. Continue drilling and clearing until the desired depth is reached.
  8. Once the hole is complete, reverse the auger rotation (if necessary) and slowly lift the auger out of the hole.

7. Troubleshooting

This section provides solutions to common issues you might encounter.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Auger not rotating or rotating slowly.
  • Insufficient hydraulic flow/pressure from skid steer.
  • Hydraulic hoses incorrectly connected or kinked.
  • Auger bit jammed by an obstruction (rock, root).
  • Skid steer auxiliary hydraulics not engaged.
  • Check skid steer hydraulic system.
  • Verify hose connections and ensure no kinks.
  • Lift auger, clear obstruction, or use reversible drive.
  • Engage auxiliary hydraulics on skid steer.
Auger getting stuck in the ground.
  • Excessive downward pressure.
  • Soil buildup on auger flutes.
  • Encountering hard material (rock, concrete).
  • Reduce downward pressure.
  • Lift auger periodically to clear soil.
  • Use reversible drive to free, consider a rock auger or alternative method for hard material.
Hydraulic fluid leaks.
  • Loose hose connections.
  • Damaged hoses or seals.
  • Tighten connections.
  • Inspect and replace damaged hoses or seals. Consult a qualified technician if necessary.
