1. Introduction
This manual provides detailed instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your Hunter Sprinkler XC400 X-Core 4-Station Outdoor Irrigation Controller. The X-Core controller is designed to manage your landscape irrigation system efficiently and reliably. Please read this manual thoroughly before installation and operation to ensure proper use and to maximize the lifespan of your product.
2. Safety Information
- Always disconnect power to the controller before performing any wiring or maintenance.
- Ensure all electrical connections are made in accordance with local electrical codes.
- This controller is designed for outdoor use. Mount it in a location protected from direct sunlight and extreme weather conditions if possible.
- Do not attempt to repair the controller yourself. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.
- Keep children away from the controller and wiring during installation and operation.
3. Package Contents
Verify that all items are present in the package:
- Hunter XC400 X-Core 4-Station Outdoor Irrigation Controller
- Power Transformer (pre-installed or separate)
- Mounting Hardware (screws and anchors)
- User Manual (this document)
4. Setup
4.1. Mounting the Controller
- Choose a suitable outdoor location near an AC power outlet, protected from direct weather if possible.
- Use the provided mounting template or hold the controller against the wall and mark the screw locations.
- Drill pilot holes and insert the wall anchors if necessary.
- Secure the controller to the wall using the provided screws.
4.2. Wiring
Important: Ensure power is disconnected before wiring.
- AC Power: Connect the two wires from the power transformer to the terminals labeled '24 VAC' on the controller. Polarity is not important.
- Valve Wiring: Connect one wire from each solenoid valve to a numbered terminal (1-4) on the controller.
- Common Wire: Connect the common wire from all valves to the terminal labeled 'COM'. This is crucial for valve operation.
- Master Valve/Pump Start (Optional): If using a master valve or pump start relay, connect its control wire to the terminal labeled 'MV'. Connect its common wire to the 'COM' terminal.
- Sensor Wiring (Optional): If using a rain sensor or other weather sensor, connect its wires to the 'SEN' terminals. Refer to your sensor's manual for specific wiring instructions.

4.3. Initial Power-Up
Once all wiring is complete and secure, connect the power transformer to an AC outlet. The controller display should illuminate, and it will typically prompt you to set the current time and date.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1. Understanding the Display and Buttons
The X-Core controller features an LCD display and a dial with several positions, along with push buttons for navigation and setting adjustments.
- Dial Positions: The dial allows you to select different programming modes (e.g., SET CLOCK, START TIMES, RUN TIMES, WATER DAYS).
- Buttons: Use the + and - buttons to adjust values, and the PRG button to select programs (A, B, C).
5.2. Setting Current Time and Date
- Turn the dial to the SET CLOCK position.
- Use the + and - buttons to adjust the hour, then press the PRG button to move to minutes. Repeat for minutes, AM/PM, month, day, and year.
- Return the dial to the RUN position when finished.
5.3. Programming Watering Schedules
The X-Core allows for up to three independent programs (A, B, C).
- Select Program: Turn the dial to RUN, then press the PRG button to cycle through programs A, B, or C.
- Set Start Times: Turn the dial to START TIMES. Use + and - to set up to four start times per program. Each start time will activate all stations within that program sequentially.
- Set Run Times: Turn the dial to RUN TIMES. Select the desired station (1-4) using the PRG button, then use + and - to set the watering duration for that station (in minutes). Repeat for all stations in the program.
- Set Water Days: Turn the dial to WATER DAYS. Use + or - to select specific days of the week, odd/even days, or interval watering.
- Return the dial to the RUN position when finished.
5.4. Manual Operation
To manually water a station or all stations:
- Single Station: Turn the dial to MANUAL SINGLE STATION. Use the PRG button to select the station, then use + and - to set the run time. The station will begin watering immediately.
- All Stations: Turn the dial to MANUAL ALL STATIONS. Use + and - to set the run time for all stations. All stations will water sequentially.
- Return the dial to RUN to stop manual watering or allow scheduled watering to resume.
5.5. Seasonal Adjust
This feature allows you to globally increase or decrease watering durations for all programs without reprogramming individual stations.
- Turn the dial to SEASONAL ADJUST.
- Use the + and - buttons to adjust the percentage (e.g., 100% for normal, 50% for half, 150% for more).
- Return the dial to RUN.
5.6. System Off
To temporarily suspend all automatic watering, turn the dial to the SYSTEM OFF position. The display will show 'OFF'. To resume automatic watering, return the dial to RUN.
5.7. Rain Sensor Bypass
If a rain sensor is connected, it will automatically suspend watering when rain is detected. To temporarily bypass the sensor, turn the dial to SENSOR BYPASS. The display will show 'SENSOR OFF'. Return the dial to RUN to re-enable the sensor.
6. Maintenance
6.1. Battery Replacement
The X-Core controller uses a small lithium battery (CR2032) to maintain the time and date settings during power outages. This battery typically lasts for several years. If the time and date frequently reset after power interruptions, the battery may need replacement. Refer to the battery compartment located on the back or inside the controller for replacement instructions.
6.2. Cleaning
Clean the exterior of the controller with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure no moisture enters the internal components.
6.3. Winterization
In regions subject to freezing temperatures, it is recommended to winterize your irrigation system. This typically involves shutting off the main water supply, draining the system, and disconnecting the controller's power. Store the controller indoors if extreme cold is anticipated, or ensure it is protected from moisture and freezing temperatures.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Controller display is blank | No power to the controller; Faulty transformer | Check AC power outlet and transformer connections. Ensure the outlet is live. |
| A specific zone does not water | Faulty valve solenoid; Broken wire to valve; Incorrect programming | Check valve wiring and solenoid. Verify run time is set for the zone. Test the valve manually. |
| All zones do not water | Main water supply off; Common wire disconnected; Rain sensor active; System in 'OFF' mode | Check main water supply. Verify common wire connection. Check rain sensor status or bypass it. Ensure dial is in 'RUN' position. |
| Controller waters continuously | Stuck valve; Electrical short in valve wiring | Turn off water supply to the system. Inspect valves for debris. Check wiring for shorts. |
| Time and date reset after power outage | Backup battery is low or dead | Replace the internal CR2032 backup battery. |
