Setup and Installation
The FASTCABLiNG DIN Rail PoE Surge Protector is designed for easy integration into your network infrastructure. Follow these steps for proper installation.
1. Mounting Options
The surge protector can be mounted on a standard DIN rail or directly to a flat surface using screws.

- DIN Rail Mounting: Align the top clip of the surge protector with the top edge of the DIN rail. Push the bottom of the unit firmly until it clicks into place.
- Surface Mounting: If DIN rail mounting is not desired, the mounting bracket can be removed. Use appropriate screws (not included) to secure the unit directly to a flat surface through the designated mounting tabs.
2. Grounding Connection
A secure earth ground connection is critical for the effective operation of the surge protector. Connect a grounding wire (not included) to the grounding terminal on the unit and to a reliable earth ground point.

- Locate the grounding terminal (typically marked with a ground symbol) on the surge protector.
- Connect one end of a suitable grounding wire to this terminal.
- Connect the other end of the grounding wire to a verified earth ground point. This could be a grounding bus bar, a dedicated ground rod, or the chassis of a grounded enclosure.
- Ensure all connections are tight and secure.
Important: Without a proper ground connection, the surge protector cannot divert excess voltage safely, rendering it ineffective.
3. Connecting Network Cables
Connect your network cables to the designated "IN" and "OUT" ports on the surge protector.

- Connect the Ethernet cable coming from your PoE switch or NVR to the "IN" port of the surge protector.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the "OUT" port of the surge protector to your PoE-powered device (e.g., IP camera, access point).
- Ensure both Ethernet cables are securely seated in their respective ports.
Installation Video Guides:
Video 1: This video demonstrates the correct method for setting up surge protection in an IP camera system, including proper grounding techniques for both the NVR and the surge protector units.
Video 2: This video provides detailed instructions on how to install a DIN rail Ethernet surge protector, covering its connection and the protection it offers for multiple devices.
Operation
Once properly installed and grounded, the FASTCABLiNG DIN Rail PoE Surge Protector operates passively. It continuously monitors the incoming Ethernet line for voltage spikes or surges. In the event of an overvoltage condition, the internal protection circuitry will divert the excess energy to the earth ground, protecting your connected PoE devices from damage. No user intervention is required for its protective function.
Maintenance
To ensure optimal performance and continued protection, regular maintenance is recommended:
- Visual Inspection: Periodically check the surge protector and its cables for any signs of physical damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
- Grounding Integrity: Verify that the grounding wire remains securely connected to both the surge protector and the earth ground point.
- Cleaning: Keep the unit clean and free from dust and debris. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners.
- Post-Surge Check: After a significant electrical storm or known power surge, inspect the surge protector for any signs of damage. While designed to withstand multiple surges, extreme events can sometimes compromise its protective capabilities.
Troubleshooting
If you experience issues with your network or connected devices after installing the surge protector, consider the following:
- No Network Connectivity:
- Ensure all Ethernet cables are securely plugged into the "IN" and "OUT" ports.
- Verify the integrity of the Ethernet cables themselves.
- Check the status indicators on your PoE switch/NVR and the connected device.
- Device Not Receiving Power (PoE):
- Confirm that your PoE switch/NVR is functioning correctly and providing power.
- Ensure the connected device is PoE-compatible and within the power budget of your PoE source.
- Suspected Surge Damage: If the device was exposed to a severe surge and appears damaged or non-functional, it may need replacement. The surge protector is a sacrificial device designed to protect your more expensive equipment.
- Grounding Issues: Re-verify the grounding connection. A poor or absent ground connection can prevent the surge protector from working.
