4.2 Attaching the Lens Hood (HB-104)

4.3 Attaching the Strap (LN-3)

Attach the provided LN-3 strap to the strap lugs on the lens barrel for secure carrying, especially when shooting handheld or using a monopod.

5. Operating the Lens

5.1 Focus Mode Switch (A/M)

The lens features an A/M switch to select between autofocus (A) and manual focus (M). In autofocus mode, the camera controls focus. In manual focus mode, rotate the manual focus ring to adjust focus.

5.2 Focus Limit Switch

This switch allows you to limit the autofocus range, which can speed up focusing when subjects are known to be within a certain distance. Consult your camera manual for specific settings.

5.3 Vibration Reduction (VR) Switch

Activate the VR switch to enable optical image stabilization. This feature helps reduce blur caused by camera shake, especially at slower shutter speeds or when shooting handheld with a long focal length.

5.4 Customizable Fn Buttons and Memory Set Button

The lens is equipped with two customizable Fn buttons and a Memory Set button. These buttons can be assigned various functions via your camera's menu, such as AF-ON, focus recall, or exposure lock. The Memory Set button allows you to save a specific focus position for quick recall.

5.5 Control Ring

The control ring can be assigned functions such as aperture control, exposure compensation, or ISO sensitivity via the camera's custom settings menu.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning the Lens

  • Use a blower brush to remove dust and loose particles from the lens surfaces.
  • For smudges or fingerprints, use a clean, soft cotton cloth or lens tissue lightly dampened with lens cleaner. Wipe gently in a circular motion from the center outwards.
  • Never use organic solvents such as paint thinner or benzene to clean the lens.

6.2 Storage

  • When not in use, attach both the front and rear lens caps.
  • Store the lens in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • If storing for extended periods, consider using a dehumidifying agent to prevent mold and mildew.

6.3 Weather Sealing

The NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S features premium weather sealing. While this provides protection against dust and moisture, it is not waterproof. Avoid exposing the lens to heavy rain or submerging it in water.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your lens, consider the following basic troubleshooting steps:

  • Lens not recognized by camera: Ensure the lens is securely attached to the camera body and that both are powered off before attachment. Check for any debris on the lens or camera contacts.
  • Autofocus not working: Verify the lens is set to 'A' (autofocus) mode. Check camera settings to ensure autofocus is enabled. Ensure there is sufficient light and contrast for the autofocus system to operate.
  • Images are blurry: Confirm that Vibration Reduction (VR) is enabled if shooting handheld. Check shutter speed and aperture settings. Ensure the lens and camera are clean.
  • Unusual noises: If you hear unusual mechanical noises, power off the camera and lens immediately and contact Nikon service.
