This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the safe and effective use of your Braun Smart IPL, Silk·Expert Pro 5 device. Safety Information

RISKS OF USING THE SILK EXPERT: The Silk expert is an electrical device that emits intense pulses of light. Read the User Guide fully before using the Silk·expert. BENEFITS OF USING THE SILK EXPERT: The Silk expert has been tested in a clinical trial on 33 subjects who received 12 weekly treatments. Using the Silk·expert device on photosensitive skin could result in skin damage including blisters and swelling. DO NOT USE the device on any area where you may want hair to grow back. Hair removal by lasers or intense pulse light sources can cause increased hair growth in some individuals. Based upon currently available data, the highest risk groups for this response are females of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and South Asian heritage treated on the face and neck. Always check the instructions that come with your medical products to see if photosensitivity is listed as a side effect. Using the Silk·expert device on photosensitive skin could result in skin damage including blisters and swelling. The side effects reported in the clinical trial were: Itchiness – Four subjects experienced mild itchiness after treatment. Slight Redness – This was reported by 1 subject. Mild Stinging Sensation – Five subjects reported mild discomfort following treatment. In-growing Hair – One subject reported experiencing an in-growing hair following treatment. Follicle Redness – One subject reported a red spot at the treatment site following treatment. In all cases, the treated skin returned to normal within 7 days.DO NOT use the device if you have very dark skin. DO NOT use the device if your skin has been artificially or naturally tanned or is burned from sun overexposure. DO NOT expose treated areas to the sun. Wait at least 7 days after treatment before exposing treated skin to direct sunlight. DO NOT use the device directly on the nipples, genitals or around the anus. DO NOT use the device if you have a history of skin cancer or pre-cancerous lesions. DO NOT use if you are pregnant, lactating. DO NOT use on dark brown or black spots such as birthmarks, moles or warts. DO NOT use if you have any skin condition in the treatment area, including psoriasis, vitiligo, eczema, acne, herpes simplex or active infections or wounds. DO NOT use if you are under the age of 18. DO NOT use on tattoo or permanent make-up in the treatment area. DO NOT look directly into the treatment window. The clinical trial participants showed on average 44% less hair 6 months after their last treatment and 36% less hair 12 months after their last treatment. Actual results did vary from person to person. DO NOT use if you have a known sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity) or are taking a medication that causes photosensitivity e.g., certain antibiotics such as tetracycline, NSAIDS such as ibuprofen or retinoids such as Accutane and/or topical retinoids such as Retin A. DO NOT use on beard/facial hair for men.

Setup

1. Unpack the device: Carefully remove all components from the packaging.
2. Clean all removable parts: Use warm, soapy water to clean any removable heads or accessories. Ensure they are completely dry before reattaching.
3. Charge or plug in the device: Connect the power cord to the device and a power outlet. The device is designed for corded use.
4. Choose the appropriate attachment: Select the head suitable for the area you intend to treat.
   • Standard head: For areas like lower legs or underarms.
   • Wide head: For large body areas like chest, back or upper legs.
   • Precision head: For smaller delicate body parts like face and pubic area.

Operating Instructions

1. Prepare the skin: Shave the area to be treated prior to using the IPL device. The included Venus razor can be used for this purpose.
2. Power on: Plug in the device. A buzzing sound may indicate it is powering on.
3. Select power mode (optional): The device features a SensoAdapt sensor that automatically adjusts the power to your skin tone. You can also choose between Normal, Gentle, or Extra Gentle modes for comfort.
4. Apply to skin: Place the device completely against your skin. The SensoAdapt light on the sides will turn white, indicating proper skin contact and suitability for treatment. If the light is red, adjust the device position until it turns white.
5. Activate flash: Press the activation button. For larger areas, you can hold the button down for continuous flashes, allowing for faster treatment. For smaller or sensitive areas, you can individually click the button for each pulse.
6. Move the device: Glide the device slowly over the skin, ensuring consistent pressure and slightly overlapping each pulsed area to avoid missed spots.

The SensoAdapt sensor automatically detects your skin tone to adjust the light intensity for safe and effective treatment.

Maintenance

• Cleaning: After each use, ensure the device is unplugged and cool. Wipe the treatment window and device surface with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals.
• Storage: Store the device and its accessories in the provided vanity case in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture.

Troubleshooting

If the SensoAdapt light does not turn white when placed on your skin, ensure the device is held completely flat against the skin. If the issue persists, your skin tone or hair color may not be suitable for IPL treatment as indicated in the safety information and suitability chart.
